Headache racks are not required, but an extra securment device is required with the foirst 10 foot of load. so instead of having 1 securment every 10 foot, you are going to have 1 the first 5 foot another one in 10 foot.

I will admit that i don't really know for sure if headache racks are required by law. But I did pull flatbed for nearly 17 years, and always had one. I do know that they have much more value for equipment storage than they do as "protection". Most headache racks I have seen are just flimsy little aluminum. Any load that breaks a proper amount of securement isn't likely to stop after hitting a little aluminum wall on the back of a cab.

This!! I over secure so im not relying on a thin piece of aluminum to keep me from becoming a chicken on a stick. -

that's nothing.
2 years ago. i saw a tanker. break from the 5th wheel. made a nice hole through the rack. and landed in the drivers seat.
