Really it all depends on the area your in, SHC. Not trying to be rude, but it takes time to find freight with good miles. Best run I got, Kitty Hawk, NC to San Fran CA, Looked at the del. time, called dispatcher... "I think you better look at where it's going." Biggest (edit) paycheck EVER. 4 digits and my MPG bonus.

Now this local gig I might get 2-300 a week.

Living in Michigan and wanting to do flatbed I'd be looking at multi-axle steel hauler. Dearborn steel express, american motor lines, alco. Lots of steel haulers there. I'm a steel hauler from Ontario and take steel too and pick up from Michigan everyday.

Maverick is a good company to start out with if flat's are what you want to do, there's a thread in the Maverick forum by jimthehut that would make for some interesting reading for you.

This is just my opinion! to all you door hangers, young ones, this includes those of you who wear Jesus sandles shorts and sweats and those really cool sunglasses and anyone else wanting to get into flats, steps or rgns, Its HARD WORK! Chaining down and straping in the heat of summer and the cold of winter covering a load in wind snow and rain frozen equipment or so hot you cant touch it! Slick and slippery decks slimmy tarps bungees that snag on everything but what you want.
Then theres the good side you get out and work, you dont see to many over wieght flat bedders! when you get to the reciever they are glad your there because they actual need what your bringing (in most cases) except for the mills theres not much wait time. yes, a good part of the time other drivers will get out of there trucks and help you tarp or strap down in bad weather.
2 BASIC RULES TO FLAT BEDS; theses where tought to me a long time ago buy my mentor:
RULE ONE: its either going to stay on or fall off!
RULE TWO: throw as many straps till you feel SAFE then throw 2 MORE!

I have those... and a cool hat too!

Since when? Half the country is obese! Is one belly flap now considered the new normal? There's plenty of waddling porkers pulling flats.

I like the cut off sweat pants and matching t-shirt that only covers half that big gut.

You know, the ones you can smell way before you get to the fuel desk to pay for your fuel....:biggrin_2552:

Try swift, they have a flatbed and work with students...Istarted there they did a good job of training me and now i have been doing this for seven years. Also might look at western express they start out new flatbedders, they are decent to start out with. They go all over and do legal and od loads. and they do a variety of different freight.
