Driving a Mack 18 speed. I guess im doing it wrong im up shifting at 13-14 rpm. Always missing gears. But i have to throttle it really hard to reach 15rpm. any advice i used to drive a kw that would be driving smoothly at 15rpm but this mack is always around 13rpm. Whats the best steady rpm for driving when not shifting? Do Macks shift at lower rpms? any advice would help thanks.

Year of Mack and the model would help. Different motors have different torque curve. But anyhow, they all shift the same. All trucks with Eaton’s do. There’s around a 400 rpm drop in between gears for 8 and 10 speed. 18 speed as well if you aren’t splitting gears. If you are splitting then there is about 200 rpm drop. My peterbilt with cat has 18 speed and I’m shifting at 1800rpm. Do I need to? No. If I’m splitting gears, I’m probably loaded and I’m not gonna split gears at 1500 rpm. Are you saying you are trying to split gears at 1300 rpm and it’s not goin into gear? Again, need to know more about your truck year and engine. You should be able to shift at any rpm range floating as long as you have enough rpm and road speed to hit next gear
MackRookie Thanks this. -
Its a 2007 Mack 460hp engine

Trying to shift at 1300 or 1400 becuz i dont like full throttling the truck unless i should be doing it that way?

It’s probably a Mack 18 .......they shift like crap anyway.
You’ll get the hang of it.stwik, 25(2)+2, KB3MMX and 1 other person Thank this. -
Ok maybe someone else will chime in. Never driven one of those. My experience is with driving one of my buddies older rd688’s.

Can someone let me know if it makes a big difference in fuel if i full throttle or tap the padel when driving and shifting?
-
You can do either, just one will burn more fuel and get you there a touch faster. I personally don't use much more than half throttle at most. Try shifting at 1500 and see. My guess is 1300 is dropping next gear down to 1000, or that 18 speed is clapped out?KB3MMX, Oxbow and MackRookie Thank this.

I’ve always been pedal happy. Other people’s trucks and my personal truck. Hammer down is how I’m shifting gears all day long. I’m local though and only burn about 25 gallons a day. Hammer down and she will always go in to gear
KB3MMX, MackRookie and Big_D409 Thank this.
