For those of us with less than perfect hearing........ you can "feel" when you need to shift as well.........
-
**snicker** I like that method....

"Ok, I am NOT going there. No. Not even close. I may be crazy, but I am NOT stupid. Very."

StoryTeller - nah - I didn't REALLY think you thought I thought that. But, in this day and age it's always best to be sure you know the other person knows that you know he knows.
OUCH! Man,the truth hurts!
Not me. I always assume you can do the job you say you can. This is known as "providing enough rope". It's up to you (the job doer) to decide if you are going to hang yourself or warp the ship into the dock.
nah, I'd go insane first. It's like trying to find a white bead in a room full of polished rice. -
I always want to see someone use a clutch and shift a Mack 5 x 3 or a 4 x 4. I never called it floating in 1.7 million miles either but I'm just a stupid truckdriver, a retired Aviation Mechanic, a pilot and a farmer and I drive horses as a sideline.
-
Not add a clutch? Ohh how would you stop? my truck says nothing about using the clutch to change gears atleast no where i can find!!!
-
I learned dbl clutching at school. When I got on my first mentors truck, he taught me to clutch out of gear and float into the next (9 spd). The last trainer was a young guy driving for an o/o, all he did was float (9spd) The clutch brake was hosed so it would grind going into gear from a stop (KW T2000). It was not the best shifting truck so I quickly learned to float up/down on this truck.
For my second road test, I dbl clutched the 10spd on an old shaker Century, but when the dude wasn't in it, I found that it was a very slick shifting truck without the clutch, that's how he drove it, smooth as glass. If no shock loads or grinding are being applied to the transmission, I can't see how you are hurting it.. -
Your truck owner's manual doesn't, but the booklet that comes with your transmission might. The Eaton booklet for TMC trucks did, specifically, say not to float.
-
Hopefully you are allowed to put that clutch in as you come to a stop. Even floating we still use the clutch for stop and go otherwise you run the risk of rear-ending someone by paying too much attention to your shifting or blowing out your motor from over heating or forcefully down shifting way too soon. I'm a little backwards though I use my braking systems only when absolutely necessary while still being as pro-active as possible. <-- Falls under unnecessary ware and tare for me too.
