I found it much easier to float than to double clutch. It's a heck of a lot smoother too. :)

When you've been in the same truck for a while you will get the feel for it. I shift by engine sound now. Leaves my eyes to focus on more important things than the tach.

Dye Guardian and Kannonball Thank this.

Perhaps for your learning curve but that is not true for everyone. There's a reason they put tachs in trucks.

Shifting by sound never worked for me. I've always used the tach.

Not my curve, just the 6 guys ive taught how to float. They spent so much time staring at the tach, trying to find that magic number. And by the the time they do road speed is down 10 mph. Now there grinding or dogging the wrong gear. Using your ears works so much better, you can hear the high point and low point. Try teaching when up shifting from 5 to 6 you acelerate to 28 mph or 1750 rpms, whichever comes first then as you begin to lift off the gas lean on tbe stick it sgould fall out. Now you have to get into the 6 hole before ypu fall below 1650 or so, should you miss it you can goose tbe gas to fix the rpms but if ypu loose more then 5 mph ypu will dog out 6 IF you can get it. So you may have to go back to 5 but as you have lost so much road speed you may have to get it on the low entry closer to 1200...... ( i know those are not exactly acurate numbers)

That was my point. Whatever works for a student. In my other profession I teach many ppl of all ages and abilities. What works for one doesn't work for another.
