My dad and uncle, who were mechanics, both told me that if you shift without using the clutch, you wear a groove on the input shaft. In my Peterbilt, which I bought from my uncle, half the time I wasn't pushing the clutch further than the freeplay, or floating. I try to use the clutch, but I forget sometimes.

I was banging the gears on my '76 YZ 125 as a kid with no clutch.
Anyone who uses the term "floating gears" is a newbreeder.
I never heard that term until TTR was born.truck_guy and Brettj3876 Thank this. -
Took me a solid few weeks to get down pat. I never fully double clutch but if im heavy and getting started on a grade I will use the clutch to get it out of gear and slide her in. The heavier I am the more I use my left foot

I learned that term from my trainer at Stevens and he'd been driving since the early 80s.JReding Thanks this.

I had a '77 YZ 80 and later on an IT 125. If you were bangin' them you were doin' it wrong

I always liked clutching going up.
Floating going down. That was otr.
Then you go to an old tiny sterling witg a lawn mower detroit or mercedez ....where you rev the hell out of it ethier way because the engine has no power.
I saved loads of fuel otr doing that. Not so much in the little truck so I just float in the high gears.
So really it depends on the truck. -
You, and Richard Nixon.

^^^^Good ole Dick. Hey @rank Have you ever been around the old honda cr500? My buds dad had one and it was stupid, hurt yourself fast. I'm looking at used banshee's I love the sound of that twin 350 2 stroke. I'd love to find a late 80's cr250r 4 wheeler but they want some steep prices. That brought back a lot of memories started riding at 5 years old on a honda atc70 4 speed auto and mudflaps off my dads truck as fenders lol

Nope. I rode a buddy's CR125 and CR250. Tried to kick over a Yamaha 500cc single cylinder 4 stroke one time.....what were they called again.....XT500? I couldn't do it. I was 14 I think.
