I always hated going to a curb-machine job. And they always sent me because I was one of only two drivers that had the deep reduction on my tranny.
I learned years ago to dislike the "you're not a real trucker unless..." philosophy. I'm guessing this is tongue-in-cheek, otherwise I'd have to tell the drivers I know who've clutched for thirty plus years that they've been doing it wrong the whole time. And I've always preferred floating myself.Bean Jr., noluck and Dave_in_AZ Thank this. -
Curb machine was a snap. It's when you had 9 to 11 yards of poured in place curb or stem wall that made you talk to yourself lol.JReding Thanks this.

That's funny, I didn't mind doing the pour in place as much. Maybe it was the type of curb machine, I don't know..?
Last time I drove a mixer was back in '94. I was assigned a '78 Mack r600 with the Maxidyne/5 speed Maxitorque setup, along with reduction and deep reduction controls. 9 yards. 10 yarders were only just beginning to make an appearance, I believe.Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
The whole plant simply referred to mine as " The Beast ".
Cummins ISM / 8 speed with 4 reverse and 4 grannies / so I dunno 16 gears I guess. Unbelievable low end torque. No one else ever drove it except this one big black dude when I'd take holiday lol.
Oh yea, I'd insult the dispatchers ancestors. They'd give me 10 yards for fence company at the end of the day, that's a good 3 hours working that clutch lol. It's the truck that's my normal avatar.JReding Thanks this. -
We all know the standard ball cap or trucker cap. What I want know is who the thought a button right on top was a good idea?
It was months after driving that Mack before I quit ducking every time I hit a bump.Last edited: Dec 15, 2016

Drive fully loaded B-trains in rush hour stop-and-go traffic and get back to me on why floating is better.
Or try starting out with loaded B-trains on a hill and double clutch though those low-range splits. -
Mostly for the rythym. That's why I double. My dad built transmissions and he claimed not using the clutch wears a groove in the input shafts. My uncle said the same thing, they both drove 2 sticks in the 50s and 60s, and so have mechanics I have asked. I try to double, but sometimes get lazy and don't use it. What I have a problem is guys who feel you can NEVER use the clutch except starting out. Sometimes you miss, and the stab of the clutch helps get in gear, instead of going miles trying to jam it in.

I float, unless I'm loaded really heavy and starting out on a hill...
