    When I started I was doing the same as OP, really watching tach to figure out when to shift .... OP, you'll get the hang of it, it really is a feel ear thing because it's going to drive you nuts when you think you have it down and then realize the "numbers" will change drastically based on road grade, loaded vs empty vs bobtail, and even at different weights (a change of 1 ton plus or minus on load will amaze you). You're also going to see difference from rig to rig, they each have their own personality. But relatively soon you'll get the feel of it.

    I started in a 13, then 18 for 4 yrs and now in an automatic that I love.
