I need a Dump truck, a Dozer and an excavator and it seems a CDL! Half of my land moved on 9/27/24. I need to put it back. I have passed my DOT phys yesterday, today, I passed 4 knowledge tests (General, Air brakes, Combination and Doub/tripl) and received my CDL permit. This is in Johnson city TN and I live in Butler. Being retired, 68yo,male I do not plan on working in this industry. I know make God laugh! So I plan on securing a single axle air brake 32k gvw dump , a deck over 12t gvw tag trailer to tow my 18k midi ex and 16k Komatsu D37 dozer. I still have to take ELDT online ( will start tonite). Any advice as to what next? Ie truck school, friend with truck or ?
Thank you for reading.
Also investigated farm exception and although legal our local trooper says he'll red tag me everytime he sees me, He says dump trucks, excavators and dozers not farm equipment, Que sera. With CDL I can smile and hand it over. My farms are 16 miles apart. The flooded one will receive top soil from the non flooded one

I think your local trooper may be wrong . If you own the farms and the equipment and you’re conducting farm business you should be good. I don’t think the farm exemption specifies types of equipment at least in Ohio. Might want to check that
Lav-25, Arctic_fox, MAMservices and 3 others Thank this. -
Definitely check into it. Something doesn't sound right.

I gently told him the same thing. He said"I'll still red tag and tow and maybe the judge agrees with you, Ill still do it."
Then again the way the statute reads here in TN I can use the exemption 180 days out of 365. It'll probably take me 2- 3 years to repair property.
I also figure non-cdl equipment around here is more expensive than cdl equipment on the used market. So the license will benefit me.
I guess what I am looking for in a school is one that i could take a couple of weekends training on their equipment that I can do the skills test and pre insp tests at their facility. Our local school offers a 4 week course or 6 weekends for $4000 cash. They dont have an opening for 3 months. -
Check with Tennessee dmv; I think you can register the truck as a private - non-commercial - vehicle. If you own a farm, (here, it has to meet specific requirements for a farm plate) and it is plated as farm vehicle, you can haul anything you want, it doesn't matter.
We have farms that have tracked machinery, one has a D7 cat they haul around.
if the cop harasses you, file a complaint about it.Lav-25, 77fib77, Sirscrapntruckalot and 2 others Thank this. -
I agree with Ridgeline as that is exactly the way it is in Ms. Most of these farmeres around here have more "construction style" equipment than a lot of contractors do. I mean is a class 9 farm tractor with a dirt pan behind it a farm or conmstruction machine? Your local trooper is at least a dick, and if he messed with you should definately have a complaint filed.

Check your local laws and as long as your compliant with all local and federal laws then that cop can invert and rectally insert an extra large pineapple. If he still red tags you while your not violateing any laws you can file a complaint for harassment and may even be able to sue that department. Moreso if he siezes your equipment.LTL Bull and hope not dumb twucker Thank this. -
I agree with the posts here and we have our USDA farm number and tax exemption. Where I live I have to stay on the right side of all families. the fellas at the store say hes an ####### but hes jimmys boy. Im to old to start or finish a fight anymore. I make more friends with my JLG boomlift than I do with the fishin boat. My neighbor has a wrecker and a Day cab I could use but I think I would be better served with newer equipment. Are there some schools in TN that do the testing on site with their equipment? Ill finish the ELDT this weekend and have the written done so I would need pre trip inspection and road testing with their equipment. Im not seeing such on the internet and my friends got their licenses 30 years ago.
Thanks David -
That trooper needs a reality check. Remember, everyone has a boss. Put him in his place the minute he abuses his authority for hassling you when moving your farm equipment.
TripleSix, hope not dumb twucker and GoneButNotForgotten Thank this. -
And several hundred loads later and a lot of rental fees for a skid steer we got her back better than it was beforeLav-25, hope not dumb twucker and MAMservices Thank this.
