Just finishing up my first couple week OTR. I am disappointed in Pilot/Flying J - Loves.
What happened to the nice sit down diners? These stops are nothing but franchise food outlets. When I get thru with a days driving or starting out my day I want some home cooked food like a roast beef gravy sandwich or a 3 egg omelet and hash browns..not something between a bun.
These observations were made on the west coast.
We are really losing our culture.

TA or Petro. So-so menu but real food.
Some of the Shell, Stripes and other assorted stops have Tex-Mex, fresh fruit or salad bars. Not sit sown, but pretty good food.48Packard Thanks this. -
Never was impressed by any of the "home cooked meals" and their service.

They got away from these because drivers don't have time to deal with sit down diners except at the end of day. After you've dealt with the menu, prices, and calories at Country Pride and Iron Skillet, you'll also begin to see other reasons why, mainly in your wallet and your waist line. These are ok on occasion and I'm glad they are where they are, but Subway actually fills a large need drivers have ... sensible food (that is consistent for the most part and you know what you're going to get), sensible prices, and fast.
Roadmedic, joseph1135 and 48Packard Thank this. -
Truck stop diners sucks, because most truckers think a 50 cent tip is enough.
learn where to park and walk to a decent restraunt.
And tip a lot -
I eat out of my 12v cooler all week.

x2
Way cheaper and keeps the weight off. -
I also learned to eat out of my 12V in self defense. If you do it right you can eat 10 times better than 90% of the "restaurants" you'll run into. But every now and then when you're at a TS that is near something, take advantage and go across the street. Or buy yourself a Kingpin lock and go for a drive and find something. You can look up "local" stuff with reviews over the internet. "Smartphone"anyone??? I found many good places that way.
It'll give you a change of pace and actually feel like a normal person. Plus, you'll learn. I remembered all the good places to eat and went back when I went back that way. Did I mention a Kingpin Lock??? There's a hint there. IF your company will let you. Mine did. That doesn't mean you can drive 30 miles, but I found MOST companies don't mind a mile or two. Some not at all. It depends.
But, you're right! If you eat at the modern TS, Not only will you continually feel like you want to "throw up". But you'll gain 90 pounds!!!

Dr_Fandango44 Thanks this. -
AMEN TO THAT!!! PLEASE tip when you sit down. Don't be a cheap B#^&^*D!!! Those girls work hard. and have to put up with 30 other guys BS before she gets to you. That's how she makes her money, treat her like it.Raiderfanatic Thanks this.
