I know Pilot/Flying J's corporate attitude and management stink.
Numb Thanks this. -
Never had a problem with it. Luck??? Maybe. It's good to be lucky!!!
Plus I never left one in an area I didn't feel was a problem. But it sure was nice to leave the trailer behind sometimes. Never had a problem. I'll take it.
Not for everyone tho -
Regarding coolers: how do you manage to make one last longer than a few months without experiencing a melt-down of the plug? I've had this happen on no fewer than four coolers and finally just went to an ice chest, but it's a PITA.
Suggestions appreciated. -
What I did was, I bought my cooler from Walmart (GASP!!!). But, For that, I got the SAME cooler that was at the Pilot/ Flying-J/ Petro, ETC; and it was only $89+ tax AND it included the AC adapter with it. That IS NOT included at the TS supplied ones. It made it nice that I could take it into the Hotel room with me when I got a room.
PLUS, after reading the reviews, I determined that the PLUG seemed to be the main issue with them, as you stated. So, for an extra $20 (I think, I know it was no more than that) I got the 2 yr warranty.
So, sure enough, It went out about 6 months in and I took it back to the nearest Walmart and WITH THE RECEIPT, I was given a brand new one off the shelf. Gave them the old one and that's all there was to it. No fuss, No muss! Easy as pie and there is USUALLY a Walmart along your route somewhere. So if it DOES take a dump, you should be able to replace it before your food gets warm.
Now if your the industrious type, If I remember right. There was a post somewhere on here that showed you how to change the cord and fan out to a more "durable" cord and fan. But, When I was out OTR, doing surgery on my cooler wasn't high on my priority list. I wanted to enjoy my down time. So, hunting down a Walmart was a lot easier for me. I got the cooler, the AC adapter and the warranty for what JUST the cooler cost at the TS. Unless it's changed. READ the box and you'll see what's in it. That'll tell you what kind of deal your getting.
Good luck. The cooler is worth it. -
I use a real compressor Black and Decker 120 volt fridge running off the Volvo built in inverter. It draws a maximum 350 watts when the compressor first kicks in and 150 steady while cooling. Even has a little freezer compartment. I can run my fridge and cpap for at least 8 hours nonstop and not drain the battery to where the low voltage cutoff kicks in.

Cut off the plug and run through a switch.mattbnr Thanks this.

I've had my cooler for three years now, but it is one of the $200 ones from a TA. Runs of 12 or 120 volts. When it does go I'm going with a setup like Packrattdi has, I have been wondering what the watt draw was on those mini fridges. I had a coleman once, it lasted two weeks.

Pilot/Flying J and Loves have hot dogs, what more do you need?

My old Coleman melted the plug like 5 times. I tried every plug I could find. I finally cut the end off, and hard wired it to a heavy duty on/off switch and plugged it right into the power plug wiring. No more problems. The new cooler I got from walmart has a new style plug on it so it fits tighter and doesn't rattle around. So far no problems and it's been 3 months.
