Hi all, My hubby just purchased a year wifi with flying j, mostly for entertainment like Netflix etc. So far he stopped in Pickering, Ontario for 2 days. Day 1 internet access was good. Day 2 he couldn't connect, went and talked with manager who told him we not honouring that you have to pay. Corporate says we cannot control what happens in Canada. Next was Rapid City, SD (i90) would not honour it, then Wye, MT would not honour it. Another call to corporate where they stated they own nothing in Montana - flying J are mostly fuel only, some will honour showers/coffee etc. most will not. Road Rangers in Illinois have pulled out of Flying J so will not work/honour in Illinois according to corporate a 0630 this morning!! Any tips from other long haulers - he does have cell data plan for roaming from Canada, however, Netflix is a bit of a data hog... US cell providers will not give him a monthly plan without a US credit card and a US zip code.
Pilot/FJ “premium” WIFI is only available on some locations, but perhaps 70% will have it. The rest either won’t have any WIFI or will only have free WIFI, which is only good for browsing the internet. Check on Pilot/FJ app to verify if WIFI is available, especially premium WIFI. I suggest you look into Verizon or AT&T. Costs are much lower now. Both companies have gone unlimited with data, and this time they are not going back.
Montana “PFJs” (Town Pumps) are not the best place to try and use PFJ premium WiFi plans. They are generally branded dealers and don’t have much to do with PFJ official services. That said, I have had pretty good WiFi performance at some Montana Town Pumps. They typically honor the PFJ login but it is a different system nonetheless.
I bought a couple single days when I first started driving. The outdoor WiFi sucked. I changed my cell plan and it still cost less than paying for a year of spotty WiFi. They should fix it. Until then my cell carrier will get my money.
If you're Canadian it's not as easy to get a us cell phone. Need USA zip code and address. It can be done just some extra headaches to deal with. I think this is the issue the op is facing. Op if you can make it happen. Verizon has an awesome 22 gig plan I pay $92 per month I think. Coverage pretty much everywhere.
Their WIFI was a joke a couple years ago. Their slow WIFI is now free, and what they sell today is the premium WIFI, which is not bad, but my Verizon data is faster. I still remember the days when 3G/4G or LTE were not available on my 10 hr break. Now, I have data like 95% of the time. These cell phone companies have really helped us truckers.
Verizon’s plans changed a year or two ago. It seems like every time they make changes they never notify their current customers. Their unlimited data plan will cost you $105 with a fully paid phone.
