Before everyone gets out of shape, read what is granted.
Just like Prime, CR England and several companies before all this pertains to is the period from passing a full CDL driving skills test and receiving the actual piece of plastic issued by the government.
If the state prints the license and hands it to the driver before walking out of the building this is no different.
It is NOT teaming with a CLP holder in the driver seat and the trainer in the bunk.
FMCSA grants Werner’s request

When I passed I received a temp cdl and waited for the actual one which took 3 days. I haven’t read the concession but from what is said here and if it’s true that’s messed up. If not oh well didn’t think there needed to be a concession for something that didn’t exist.God prefers Diesels Thanks this. -
Every state is different. Some states are so backward it takes 6 weeks from passing the skills test to getting the license in the mail. Plus sometimes scheduling home time takes a week...
Here is the relevant quote.
"“Werner requested an exemption to allow CLP holders who have passed the CDL skills test but have not yet obtained the CDL document from their State of domicile, to drive a CMV without having a CDL holder in the passenger seat."stuckinthemud and God prefers Diesels Thank this. -
ya I decided to read the document. Why do megas train new hires for a month or two but in this case ok with not even training them. Straight from school to loads. This means Werner trying to do away with trainers?

Safety obviously not a priority anymore.

Well I guess as ZVar explained it's just a matter of them waiting to get their actual license, which in some states takes more time than others. I do wonder how long Werner trains their students though.God prefers Diesels Thanks this.

I know news tends to sensationalize, but look at the fmcsa quote.
"FMCSA has analyzed the exemption application and the public comments and has determined that the exemption, subject to the terms and conditions imposed, will likely achieve a level of safety that is equivalent to, or greater than, the level that would be achieved absent such exemption,” the FMCSA said."
How? How is GREATER safety achieved by not waiting on a peice of paper/plastic? I could grant that its fine, but its wishful thinking at best to say this is better for safety somehow.
Appreciate your clarification, but it doesnt address thisstuckinthemud, D.Tibbitt, God prefers Diesels and 1 other person Thank this. -
Well Ashley, the author of the article, probably achieved her goal of getting people to click on her article.
She purposely put misleading information in both the headline and the complete first paragraph of her article.
My bad for not reading further before I made my post.
I still don’t believe the “safety” part of it.stuckinthemud, God prefers Diesels and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I can’t say much against it. Just a Technicality. They probably have Drivers ready to go Solo, but still waiting on their State to do their Job. They should make a final ruling for everyone though, not issue exemptions for just a few. I did my Training and Road Test in a Werner Truck. My Dad was a Trainer there for 10 yrs. Total Training was 3 hrs. Driving, and 1 hr. Backing up, the day before my test. Did it on the weekend using a 3rd party Testing site, in a Company Werner Truck. I then drove from Detroit to Buffalo to Cleveland while he slept. Werner would have surely fired him had they found out. Too bad they needed the new regulation to begin with. Originally designed to avoid sending a Driver out Solo, that Cant Drive. We see that all too often.

When I switched my CDL to Texas, it took like 15 days to get the actual license in the mail. They gave me a piece of paper with my picture and info. Made me legal.
What sucked, is it wouldn't get me a pack of cigarettes at a gas station, and they confiscated my Colorado license at the DMV.D.Tibbitt and Rideandrepair Thank this.
