I'm in the process of going through the checklist OOIDA provided for the FMCSA new entry audit. I have two questions for those of you that's been through it:
1. We're required to "produce a copy" of the FMCSR/HMR. Are they expecting an actual book to be present? Or would internet access to the FMCSA website containing these regulations meet the requirement?
If you actually bought books, where did you get them? I checked at a Petro not too far from here and they didn't carry either of the books I mentioned, nor did they have the small copy that's supposed to be in the truck. Maybe a pointer via PM to a particular truck stop chain (even better, one near Atlanta) that's more likely to have a better "library section" in the supply store?
I'll order online if I have to, but for something like this I like to see what I'm buying first-hand and it wouldn't hurt to have a copy right now instead of waiting for delivery. I do need the truck copy immediately anyway.
2. Will we get nicked on the hazmat items if we're not hauling any? Our authority doesn't include hazmat, nor does our driver have any endorsements.
Thanks in advance!

Access to the internet is sufficient, as far as our auditor told us.
We don't haul Hazmat so we didn't get dinged. You should be OK.RedForeman Thanks this. -
You will find that it is different by state. What I have been doing is calling the local office and asking quesitons. They have been very helpfull.
And you can order it online from JJ Keller and should have no issues. I think they do the little green ones I see in all the TS.RedForeman Thanks this. -
Heck, my last truck had 3 FMCSR books on the overhead bin - ask a company driver for one!

Thanks for all the good advice folks. I've also been digging deeper on the FMCSA site and other sites and seeing similar advice, just not as clear.
BigBadBill: I guess sometimes the most obvious source for direction gets overlooked when also trying to keep a low profile. I've dug deep on the FMCSA site and found where they really do make the effort to get operators to run safe and have the guidance there if you look for it.
bulhaulerswife and ronin: great advice and thanks. On the book requirement, my experience is with FAA not DOT. They require every pilot own the regulation book just like DOT does. However, every pilot shop has them and on the trucking side I guess I chose two random truck stops that didn't. I had to order some other compliance stuff so I just got the books on there for another $30. They'll be here on a brown truck in a day or three. Ronin you're right on about the company drivers. My driver said the company he worked for had them on the service cart. Whenever the truck got PM the book was on the checklist and they threw one in the cab if they didn't see it. I'm sure a few got extras floating around in them.bullhaulerswife Thanks this.
