My first post here— I’m new to big trucks, but am fairly mechanical and grew up Farm Boy. I have been towing and driving flatbed/straight truck for twenty years. Last week I completed CDL school with all my endorsements and now the next step.. Get a Job!
Jobs I see advertised in the usual spots are frustrating. Even the job board at school all said “2 years experience required”. Why would they put up a poster at a school if they require experience? School owner said “if they post here, they’ll hire new drivers” which makes sense- except I’m yet to get even a callback from one of them.
Any suggestions for a person to gain experience and a livable gig while doing so? I have a wife and kids etc but we’ve discussed that if I have to go otr to get rolling I will. I live just outside Yakima Wa if that helps someone make a suggestion.
Thanks!

I'm really surprised that you're not getting a call back from a company that advertises at your school. I remember that my school vetted anyone that advertised or visited the school. You're absolutely correct, why advertise knowing that everyone won't have experience. I'd make a visit to whomever at the school is responsible for "marketing" their students and pose the question to them. Additionally, I'd make either a follow-up phone call or personal visit to the companys.
Good luck.Bluedew and Fourspeedwagon Thank this. -
We'll find a good for you on here. You may not have to do OTR, unless you want to. @JReding lives in Washington and may give you some leads also.
Leavitt's Freight Service - www.leavitts.com has hired a few drivers right out of school.
- CDL qualified with less than 2 years' experience? We will consider your application and upgrade your skills. (You must have your CDL we are NOT a CDL school)
- Must currently reside in Oregon or Washington
Trans-System - www.trans-system.com - three different divisions to choose from and they hire new cdl graduates. I'm surprised the school didn't have information about this company.

Lynden is one I’ve been trying to reach as well. I’m only a few miles from their Sunnyside location and they’re ad (which they run constantly) doesn’t mention a certain experience requirement. Thinking I should drive over there and see if I can find an actual person since I’m not having luck with their online application.

Thanks for the ideas. I just now finished the Loves/Gemini application. I went to the UPS site but they aren’t currently looking it says. I think I filled out there before so it’s with them on file. I’ve been trying to get the Simplot application site to work for an hour now. The page freaks out and crashes when I try to add previous employment. Maybe it doesn’t work with an iPad.. I’ll try to find a pc to work off of and try again.
Ace has a center not far away and it advertises at the school. Any opinions on them? They haven’t replied to me, I went there day before yesterday and the person to talk to was out for lunch. I left a message and nothing.
