We have drivers in the mid to late 50s even few in early 60s who are about to retire but still work 4-5days a wk. all in ur mindset n what kind of shape your in. We just had a guy start in the warehouse 3wks ago that is probably in better shape than anyone in are warehouse n he is 51yrs old but looks to be late 20s early 30s..I was surprised when he told me his age. He is like 5"3 Asian guy but built like a mofo use to be a personal trainer

It's not your age it's what SHAPE you are in. Mick Jagger is 70 I bet he would have NO PROBLEM doing a food service route. Iggy Pop is 66 I bet he would have NO PROBLEM doing a food service route. Sylvester Stallone is 67 I bet he would have NO PROBLEM doing a food service route. It's the shape you are in, not your age.

Well, I had my interview at McLane on last Thursday. The Trans Mgr confirmed everything I have heard about foodservice.. tough work but great benefits and pay. McLane is actually looking to hire several drivers..They are a growing company from what I hear. They also have a program that allows guys to work in their warehouse and then work their way into being a driver. They call it grow your people or grow your own guys or something like that... I have never heard of something like that.

there are a lot of companies where you begin at the docks
-
I work for them. Similar to all the other food guys except we deliver to wharehouses (including theirs) instead of stores. Like all the others, great bennies and pay. I cant speak for the other companies but they really do treat you well here

Yea sysco has the same program but they don't really advertise it. They want u to pull orders so u no what it's like to deal with products. Then learn how to load the trucks so u can see how it needs to be setup to try n benefit the driver. Then they will send u out on few ride along to see if u like it. If u do then they will train u to get your Cdl. My house has offer this to me not sure if I'm gonna take them up or not.

Does SYSCO get a large quantity of drivers from the warehouse?
-
At my warehouse I've only known one guy to transfer from warehouse to driving most ppl they hire come from other food service jobs or transfer from Sygma fresh point n few other company's that are owned by sysco. Since sysco pays better but is harder.. Just what I've heard from drivers I've talked to.

I work for them as well, I'm young and worked 3 years in the warehouse before becoming a driver. After talking with Mclane, Sygma, Sysco drivers... I'm perfectly content right where I am at. Depending on which DC your closest to, you're usually home every other night. Once in a blue moon they'll have me do something crazy like a NYDC to OKDC transfer. I personally don't like sitting on my ### driving for 10 hours a day, I'd rather throw cases. But pay is good, tons of bonus potential, 2 weeks vacation after a year, list goes on and on.
Also, entire fleet is automatic trans. Real nice thing when going through big city traffic.Astoh Thanks this.
