The Boeing 747-200 is a inadequate machine versus the Airbus 780.
The Boeing 747-200 can probably carry roughly 400 souls about 7500 statue miles. And do it with a metal body that is heavy requiring excessive fuel burn and inadequate engines at mach .85 It is a relic of 40 years ago and a shining symbol of the free world's freedom and travel in luxury.
The Airbus can do 650 souls at roughly 9500 statue miles and have 30% if not more free space for the people within the volume of the cabin and certain luxuries, including complete one bedroom apartments. It will have the Rolls Royce Trent engines that are capable of pushing that massive marshmallow to .89 mach and do it with half the fuel burn of the 747-200 per hour somewhat higher. The plane is carbon fibre to boot where possible.
And it will still load all those people as quickly as a 747 can and evacuate a touch slower than the 747.
The Boeing 747-400 series is the last of it's kind I believe if they chose not to try the future 747-800 which will begin to approach the airbus. There are still many airports in the world within 8500 miles (A thousand or so farther than the -200) that wont fit the 780 until they are upgraded.
We just begun some routes with the 780 that are truly epic. Takes roughly 17 hours to get there and has to cross the north pole to get it done in some cases. Long enough for the rotation to assist the flight in getting there somewhat quickly and in range of that fuel on board.
A trucking comparison would be a rig that could carry 160,000 legally by axle weight from LA to Jersey on 30% less fuel with about a 12 to 1500 horse engine. The liability in time is still the speed limits. They will have to be boosted closer to 100 if not beyond to being to chip away at the roughly 65 hours it now takes to do the trip in a 63 mph governed truck.DUNE-T Thanks this. -
Except that the Airbus A380 is NOT AVAILABLE IN A FREIGHTER VERSION compared to the 747. Airbus initially did offer in the beginning but with production delays the plane experienced in its beginning stages FedEx and UPS(the two primary customers for the freighter version) canceled their orders (UPS later ordered the 747-8F version). Plus due to its long life and proven design there are plentiful parts for the 747 vs. the A380.x1Heavy Thanks this.

Agreed.
Cargo has become one of the greatest assets. And will explode in the next 30 years.
Remember that all US Airliners are capable under a war agreement with US Government that when they are called up, they are stripped of the passenger seats and cargo loaded aboard them we can mobilize thousands on the same day of that call up.
The air travel I think is being influenced by the so called Son of Concorde and other Transonic aircraft being developed. If it can get from DC to say Tokyo in a couple hours flat it will improve commerce. Hypersonic is a possiblity beyond that. I think DARPA just managed to develop a engine that will stay in that region on the new Son of Blackbird that was announced recently (A hyper-sonic bomber, supposedly capable of deploying hyper-sonic weapons anywhere on earth within the hour) The Russian has those weapons as does china. There is presently no real defense against those incoming to say our navy ships. They are simply too fast to be targeted by the present air defense technology.mjd4277 Thanks this. -
pilots are gonna get DAC'd...
they will not get another job too easily.
can't say for sure if carolina cargo will take' em.lilillill, diesel drinker, x1Heavy and 2 others Thank this. -
Pilots operate in a situation far beyond grubby truckers. Their pay and work hours and so forth are pretty nice. Although in the past that has not always been the case.
If I was not too bad off to pass the FAA Medical I'll have given a go again.mjd4277 Thanks this.
