Are you sure that was NY and NJ. They don't only expect not to get squashed there, but they will turn from lanes that are not turning lanes. Cut you off while driving on the shoulder to do so, and the sad part its 2 or 3 of them doing it. The roads will beat you to death. Traffic laws mean diddly squat. A turn signal says speed up. Low bridge signs that are not right. People who jay walk and expect you to stop in time. People who are selling all kinds of stuff in the middle of the interstate. Man if I wasn't paid and extra 150 to go into nyc. I'd stay far away. But its and adventure and just when you thought you seen it all. There's always a New Yorker who will show you. That you ain't seen nothing yet.

Yea im sure ny i had to wait almost 2 days after making my last delivery to get a load out my delivery was on 39th street to the mennites grocery stores there i had to park in lane got cursed out so many times that i stop counting almost got hit 3 times. Then on way out i think i got hung up down town i knocked a lot of dust of a bunch of signs especially the street signs on the lights. The people unloaded my truck with fork lift and chain with hook on end. I been to Syracuse several times in boon docks, there is a city chuckabunga or something like that been to more. As far as nj i mostly took my breaks there caz u no there is no where to park in ny

 

Im curios about the OP's former employer closing because of "insurance costs". Was that trucking insurance or health insurance?

You mentioned "oilfield" but I'm not sure where you are. I know of a couple of companies that are growing and looking for owner-operators. They even offer "zero-down" tractor purchase options. Both have web sites where you can check out their operations. Miller Transporters is a tank outfit based in Jackson MIssissippi. They have an in-house tractor purchase plan and tanker training. Roadrunner Transportation runs reefers, dry vans, flats, and intermodal. They have special arrangements with Lone Mountain Leasing and Arrow Truck Sales for the purchase of tractors. Good luck.

BTW, RRTS has owner-operators running LTL terminal to terminal. That's where I will be if this YRC thing goes belly-up.

 

Now I know why when I was at YRC we never took vans into Brooklyn. So technically they aren't allowed on the BQE 278...

 

Once you know what your doing NYC is no big deal. I worked for a regional company that sent 53's all the time to the boroughs. They paid the fines if you were caught. I want to say it was a grand or so. Kind of like UPS/Fed Ex and the parking tickets they get. Just a cost of doing business. I hauled a few oversize out of JFK this year. Fun stuff.
