I don't need to get home every night, just a couple nights a week suits me just fine. However, if I thought I could make at least 5k a month hauling chips during the day and getting home every night, I'd consider it.

So far, my inquiries into what the chip haulers pay, hasn't convinced me otherwise ;-)

For example, the local chip haulers in my area offered me a job last year. One was per load, the other by the hour. When I ran the numbers on load pay vs hourly, it came out to about the same:

$14.50 an hour to start (I think they raised it a little recently)
An average of 10 hours overtime at time and a half.
Start at the bottom on the night shift.
Slip seat really nasty old trucks, etc.

    $14.50 @ 40 hrs= $580.00
    10 hrs O.T. @$21.75=$217.50
    Total $797.50 a week
    $41,740 year

    That's about $19,000 a year short ;-)

Yeah you won't get rich hauling chips, I do a little better than that though and I'm less than 2 years into it so there's room to do better (at least up here).
I've talked with some guys at a smaller local company and they all said the same, about $60K a year working mostly 5 days a week.
Not easy to get on there but when I get a little more experience I'm going to stop in and submit an application.
I'll be driving 3 years in October and 2 years hauling chips, hopefully if I keep after them they'll put me on when someone retires or something.
It's even about 10 miles closer to home than what I drive on my commute now which is 32 miles one way.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not putting those wages down I listed. A lot of people would be tickled pink with that. Everyone has their own priorities and preferences.

Absolutely, home time was a biggie for me and this gig provided it in spades.
I'd have a tough time making it on $41K a year though, did better than that my first year and it takes at least a year or two to learn the ropes.
It's not an hourly gig where I work so getting fast at it and knowing where all the different facilities are and how to get in and out in a timely manor makes a world of difference.
If all goes well I should have a $50K year this year, a fair pay raise comes at 5 years with the company if I stay that long which is possible.
It'll take a pretty good gig to get me out of a seat doing 5 days a week with a 7:00am start time and 12hrs on an average dayshift making $50K.
I could see things getting better if the darn economic mess we've been in for so long ever gets better, they'll have to pay more if drivers start bailing out for other jobs.

Good thread, guys. Y2K, would you have the time a/or ability to take a 20-30 min nap in your job? I'm serious, btw.
That's the only way I could do a job like yours especially considering that I may have a 3 hr total commute on top of it.
OTOH, kinda hard to nap in dirty ole day cab...

Well sometimes, the night crew does it a lot, I did 15-20 min catnaps a lot when I was on nights.
It's a bit harder on days although at times you have to wait to load or dump as much as an hour or two so you can get some sleep then if needed, other times you're on the go all day but most days are 12 hrs and home so it's not so bad.
And yeah in a day cab sleeping isn't easy lol.
