Thinking about buying a used 05 Volvo VNL670 with 600,000 miles running the VED12 Volvo engine at 465hp backed by a 12-spd ZF Freedomline transmission. Ideally I would like an I-shift but that requires an 08 or newer truck($$$ + DPF). My other option would be the Eaton Ultrashift, which seems clunky in comparison to the Freedomline on my test drive. I am concerned about being stuck on the side of the road without any knowledgeable service people since the Freedomline is no longer sold in the US. Any thoughts? Should I avoid the truck because of this transmission? Often times I am lightly loaded and would appreciate the skip shift feature of the Freedomline.
Thanks,
David

Parts and service availability is always at the top of my list in purchase decisions. If I can't easily and consistently get parts I probably won't own it. This has worked for me with trucks, tractors. construction equipment, forestry equipment.

I would look for a Volvo with a Cummins Engine if you are set on the Volvo 670. You will get better performance and better mpg with the Cummins versus the Volvo engine.

ZF 12 st and I-shift share many parts, like clutch parts, actuators, electronic board....
Mechanically transmissions are different but made in the same style and I cant say what tranny is better! -
if you can buy i-shift it is far better hardware than AS tronic
you can drive volvo ishift like it is a racecar , it performs very smooth shifts and it is fastest gearbox on market -
-
volvo ishift can be speced up to 200-250tons
i have never seen astronic (12) above 90t and most of them are up to 70t -
there are three ore four different i-shift boxes of different torque rating.

I am mostly trying to decide between the Freedomline and the Ultra-shift, the ishift is too expensive for my budget currently. I am leaning toward the Freedomline unless I hear a convincing argument to stay away. My loads would be 20K lbs to 60K lbs, normally loaded closer to 20K.
