Can a trucker be his or her own freight broker or would that be a conflict of interest? Is it even possible to be both?

Yes you can do that. It's basically offering your service directly to the customer without a middle man.

If you are an owner operator and hauling your own loads where you are also driving, you might find it difficult to find trucks and do all the paperwork and phone calls and drive at the same time.

Yes you can but the brokers license can cost more than a cdl. Plus you need a trust fund of at least 10k..shippers are really looking for 75k or more..who has that side money nowadays?

Little off on that. 75K bond/trust fund required for the last 2 1/2 years.

    License is 300.00

Well, I think if the person is willing to do both i.e. paper work while driving the truck then its a really great idea to be a broker and trucker. at the same time.

Sounds good but in reality, is doing both really practical? There are only so many hours in a day and the most organized person will have difficulty trying to do both consistently.

    FLYMIKEXL Thanks this.

I wish FlipFlops was still a member of this forum. He started an excellent thread a couple of months ago:

    http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...get-a-direct-customer-skip-the-broker.306494/

Basically as I see it you start by getting a direct outbound customer, then rely on load boards for backhauls. Let's say you get consistent weekly loads from that customer close to home to a fixed destination. Then you are in position to try and get another customer at or near the first destination to get a load back, or maybe build a triangle route. If you get the first two sides of the triangle direct, you might be able to finish the triangle with a third direct customer.

Rates on load boards aren't near what the customer is paying. Go direct and make more money, but be prepared to take more risk and either carry receivables or factor your invoices.
