I wonder how many 60 series Detroit lovers realized that series was designed by John Deere ?...
Every time I hear someone brag about the 60 series Detroit.. The only vesion in my head is my grandfather on his JD 60 tractor and 3 bottom plow in his bib overalls

A little more development and those purple engines would have been right up there with the yellow ones. Most of the problems I heard about were application specific more than the engine itself. Pretty much the same story as the first couple years of the 1693’s. I think they quit on it too quick.Oxbow, bumper Jack and Last Call Thank this.

Detroit and Deere were planning a merge. New Company was going to be called the Dedec Diesel Corp. Penske swooped in and got Detroit. Afterwards a Top Engineer went to John Deere. John Deere developed the 12.5, the so called 12.7 Clone. Another interesting note. Catapillar sued Detroit for stealing Corporate secrets, because they hired a Cat Engineer to help develop the original ddec electronics. It took Cat years to catch up. Detroit eventually settled with Cat.

I thought they did good for a 13 liter motor.Oxbow and Rideandrepair Thank this.

I bet you didn't know that JD's 12.5 motor turned out to be a POS the longevity with those in Agricultural use is not goodOxbow, Rideandrepair and bumper Jack Thank this.

I think they had crank issues, but that all second hand information. I’ve never seen one in the wild.Oxbow and Rideandrepair Thank this.

Cat had similar issues with the 1693 at first. Nobody had ever put them in trucks before either. Cat worked out the truck engine specific parts to cure the problems they were having. Allis Chalmers never really gave their engine the same chance.Oxbow, Rideandrepair and bumper Jack Thank this.

No, I didn’t. I just googled Detroit 60/John Deere today, because I keep hearing that JD designed it. Until recently, I thought it was designed it under Penske. I’ve been in the factory a few times. Had a step Grandfather who retired right before Penske took over. It interests Me. All the Manufacturers history for that matter. Always something to learn.
