Man you sound like the Media, You may want to look in those inner city low income areas and see if this does not ring a bell. I see what you are describing more and more with in the project areas minus the Big Truck and Smoke and Family Life!

Funny I grew up in these small villages and was an actually Village since it had less then 50 people in the town. Also had less then 200 People in our K-12 school whom produced a few millionaires from my class alone. I never traveled much when I was a child either but Dad fought in WW2 and seen more than most ever will of the world. Funny how your view of the world is incredible different from this small town guy view.

As for the city vs county debate I've done both. While I'd rather hang out with someone who is reasonably articulate than someone with few teeth and fewer brain cells (provided they're not a communist) I'd definitely take that farmer or rancher all day and everyday over a banger or a crackhead. If your worldview is one where everyone in the city are all scholars and everything outside of the city is just trailer parks then trucking is certainly a good profession for you as you definitely need to get out more. Large metros do have some of the best schools but also some of the worst ones too and a trucking job isn't going to afford you a place in that more desirable zip code unfortunately.
That being said I did relocate from my little west Texas town where I was perfectly happy to DFW which was never my favorite place for a reason. Before I was extremely limited on companies that I could work for because I was outside of the hiring area of pretty much every medium to large carrier. So I made the decision to endure a lot more traffic and a far higher cost of living in order to have more choices when it came to employment. So I'm no longer at the mercy of Pedro and his amigos at their 5 broke down trucks backyard llc.
