    Hello All,

I am fresh meat to this industry. I have read many of the forums and they have given me so much insight into this world. My daughters father and I are going into business together. He's the driver and I am the business manager. (We are no longer a 'couple').

I have used this site to get more info and knowledge from everyone else's experiences, pitfalls, bonuses, and secrets. THANK YOU!!!

We are in the process of buying the trucks now. I dont care what make it is but he does. Does the make really matter? I've noticed price differences with some brands like Peterbuilt, Volvo, Western Star, Etc.

I have read many warnings from experienced truckers on this site. Question: What is a humble salary for him and for me (seperately)?

Does anyone on here carry for C.H. Robinson or Landstar? We are considering 3rd party carrying for both to keep the wheels moving. Any advice?

Thanks again everyone for all your honesty, advice, help!

Welcome to the forum fresh meat! :)

As business manager you can control his money, lol.

Seriously there is a whole bunch to learn. You just don't jump off the street and are an over night success. There will be a mistakes made in the process.

But I would do as much reading and asking questions as you can in the appropriate forums. Starting threads will get more personalized attention than asking behind someone else.

Trucks can vary from what your needs are. Do you want a truck that will last forever or are you going to buy a new one every 4 years? If you replace one regularly then you want practicability over looks. Than you have to decide on an engine manufacturer as it's not like buying a car. You can buy almost every truck with any engine in it.

Get to reading and I'm sure you're going to hear the bad with the good so put the ear muffs on or your sunglasses! :)

If you guys plan on running 48 state (california), your truck year/make/engine choices today could have consequences tomorrow. Look into California and it's various "clean air regs" some of which are in effect, others which may or may not come into effect in the near future. Search "CARB" for more info. Your budget and determination toward quality vs. practicality will make most of the decisions for you. If you're buying older equipment don't think about resale value so much, but if you're buying new or newer equipment, resale/trade value maybe should become a serious consideration today (Peterbilt and Kenworth still rate higher than most across the board). Good luck

You're no longer a couple, but he's letting you manage the business?

This boy needs a talkin' to!:biggrin_2559:

Of course, I'm kidding. My ex and I get along a lot better now that we don't live with each other! Like CC said...read, listen, and expect to make a few mistakes. But if you can avoid the BIG mistakes, you'll improve your odds of success a great deal.

Welcome, and the very best of luck to you and, uh....what used to be yours!
