Never a waste for you is what I meant also. Long after you can no longer swing a hammer you will still be able to hold a steering wheel.
Not saying that you are wrong for going back to construction, just that having a CDL is a great safety net so I can't consider it a waste.
I got my CDL in 1995, drove box trucks from 96 to 2000. Fast forward to 2016, finding myself unemployed and essentially homeless sleeping on a relative's sofa after a marriage breakup, my CDL came to my rescue. An OTR job took care of income and housing and a year and a half later I bought my own house.
I could look at the 16 years where I didn't use my CDL as a "waste", but I can't.

For the 16 year gap I didn't even think I would need it and never kept it active. Luckily for me all Florida required for reinstatement was a fresh med card...and of course the renewal fee.
