Why do the new drivers just settle on what a recruiter says? I understand that some must use these bottom feeders to get their CDL. But those who pay for school on their own automatically go with what the recruiter says. Why not go out on your own a look for yourself. And I mean go out and not just call on the phone. I would always tell someone that calls that we are not hiring because if they can not come and see me then they don't deserve to work here. Just about everyone goes with recruiters so why not do something different. You could down load trucking companies in your area, weed through the U-hauls and such then do some leg work. I've seen companies that require 2 years experience hire a driver out of school because they liked him or her. Then after you've gone through ALL your contacts then let your recruiter do what they do. And believe me they do what is best for them and not you.

I never said i was going with werner, swift or any of the cdl mill companies. As a matter of fact i have gone to the local truck stop here and there is only one seeing as how there arent too many here in the northwest. I have talked to trucking companies all over the US and had plenty of conversations with drivers out here. You automatically assume that just because i am young and have no experience that i am going to beleive what a recruiter says, well just so you know I trust there word on matters just about as far as i can throw them. Like i have posted I family in the industry and i know my way around truckstops and the like. And just so you know there are only two companies that i have applied for and they are two of the better respected in the country. So before you bash on someone get your facts straight. No one is perfect and everyone starts at the BOTTOM, weather it be the bottom of the barrell or slightly above its still the bottom none the less.

Y'know, gpgtp2005
You post questions and comments - and leave a lot unsaid. People like gashauler who have lots of experience AS a driver (not a visitor), offer perfectly valid comments and suggestions based upon what information you have provided.
Then you get in a snit and accuse them of not getting their facts straight. Facts you have not provided in the first place.
I would suggest that a little humility is in order, here.
On top of that, since you know so much about the trucking industry, why are you asking questions in the first place? -
alright well you do have a point, but you see the only question that was asked was what everyones opinion was on what time of the year is better to start out driving, not who i should or shouldnt work for. i not once said i was starting at one company or another just asking an opinion. you would know that if you read the first post that started this whole thing. everyone on here has alot of bad things to say about the bottom of the barrell companies, well the fact of the matter being, unless you have at least a year of expeience all thats available to you is the bottom of the barrell. just because you may have had a bad experience or two doesnt mean someone else will. but you, me and everyone else can agree that its the attitude that you go into this buisness with that will determine if you succeed or not.

You do have a point.
These other folks - unlike me - are just trying to be helpful.
Problem is, things like "Werner" and "recruiter" tend to be hot buttons around here.
As it happens, I DID read your first post. I didn't respond to it, though, because I've never driven a truck in the snow. I don't have the experience you'd need in order for you to trust my response.
I wasn't really trying to address the specifics of the question, but rather your response to others. Yes, it can be frustrating when somebody doesn't understand (or possibly even finish reading) your post. Even so, though, the others here should be treated with respect first. IF they prove themselves morons, THEN you can dump on them.
See where I'm going?
Maybe I should have said something to the effect that a more appropriate response should have been in a different vein. Something like"
"It's immaterial what carrier I hire on to. That's not the question. The question is: what part of the year is best to start, from a skills point of view?"
Thus, you avoid seeming aggressiveness and grumpy old farts jumping into the middle of the thread. -
But make sure they are certified. About snow? Adjust speed and following distance, and park it if conditions deteriorate.
