Here I am a CDL student not quite half way through the private school. Had several pre-hires and decided to go with Roehl. Schneider was a very close 2nd on my list.

Now I'm having second thoughts. I have sleep apnea and have used CPAP for over 5 years (same machine) and sleep much better with it than without. However, my old, perfectly working machine doesn't have a smart card. Roehl wants me to buy a new one and use it for 30 days before they can give me medical clearance. That'll cost me about $450 out of pocket after insurance pays their 80% (we have coverage).

I'd also like to be able to carry my small dog and Roehl doesn't allow. Does Schneider?

I'm beginning to think Schneider may be a friendlier place for drivers and I suspect their training, equipment and mileage may be as good. Comments?

Schneider has a better CPAP policy. No out of pocket expense at all on insurance (after 90 days you can get on insurance). Not sure what they'll do before then, maybe let you use yours? I guess after 2 years the machine is yours, if you leave before 2 years you either have to return the machine in good working order, or pay a prorated amount for the machine based on how much into the 2 year period you stayed with Schneider (if you choose to keep it or you trashed the machine).

In regards to your dog, there is no pet policy with Schneider so you can't bring your dog with you. The only way you could have a pet is if you decided to lease or own.

Yeah, no pet with Schneider. I was hoping there'd be a chance in hell I could bring one of my guard parrots with me, or a guard dog, lol.

Well, you know which company I hope you ultimately go with ;) .

Grusco,I have a Fischer Paycal hc221 that's 9 years old and they can download the information I need for DOT physical.Just because the cpap machine doesn't have a smart card or chip does not mean you can't download the info you need.------------They just want to make money off you by selling you a new machine..Regards,

I've completed the CDL school (skills test at DMV this coming Monday), took the Roehl physical, now I'm focused on Schneider instead of Roehl. My post above explains it all.

The Roehl physical ended with the Dr. giving me a 1 year DOT card (I have a 2 yr from my personal physician) conditional on my physician signing the CPAP compliance form they gave me. That was done. No matter to Roehl. They want a recent sleep study (mine is over 5 yrs old) and minimum of 30 days CPAP data (as the above post indicates I cannot supply that due to the age of my machine). Why did they want the form from my Dr. if it was meaningless?!

Also, I've been focusing on Schneider opportunities and they are great. Looking to go team (money, miles, equipment) perhaps with a classmate. Yes, I know all the negative comments on that so let's not waste this forum with more of the same! If team doesn't work out I can drive Vans, or Reefers, or Flatbed, or Tankers.

There was a comment posted here on TRF by a Schneider driver following the Texas tornado hitting the Dallas yard a few weeks ago. He said he got a call from the company asking if he and his family were alright. They didn't ask about his truck, they ask about him and his family. That speaks volumes!

Sure Schneider is a big company and sure I'll have a number and maybe not a name, but you know what? They have great safety ratings and they give drivers like me lots of opportunity. I am now completely focused on Schneider.

I will look into the organization. As long as they are not similar to a union. I had to belong to a union for about 20 years. Yes, I was in California which, like a few other states, doesn't believe in the right of a worker to choose whether or not they want to belong. Thankfully those days are slowly coming to an end in this great country. Unions see owners or managers of business as enemies and that is not a productive environment for me.

I am most interested in any organization that wants to improve an industry. IMHO that can best be accomplished when employees, management and ownership are all working toward the same goal.

I think your choice will work out for you, Grusco. Schneider seems to be a great company. I just got done with orientation and came out of the experience thinking that perhaps I could work and enjoy the company, rather than it being just the least of all evil starter companies. Time will tell, but so far, I like what I see.

I'm even more happy because I'm getting an '08 truck, and not an older, more beat-to-hell truck they normally give newbs. I pick it up on Monday!
