Here's maybe a silly question.
Does anyone buy 3 Steer tires instead of two?
If you rotate the third one with the other two, if you have a blowout or a sidewall problem then you have another tire that's going to be the same tread depth, rather than buying a new set.
I have no idea if it's worth it, but you probably would get some kind of an increase in mileage by rotating the third one in.truckdriver31 Thanks this. -

You make small cuts across the tires, it makes a lot of difference in traction, and on pavement the tires actually run cooler. A guy that never drives on snow and ice would not do it, but you pretty much have to on ice.

I don't think it matters what kind of trucking you get into. Local or OTR, you will be working those steers soon enough. I had a patch of ice at the state ware house in Nevada one afternoon after picking up Bonded Cherries (Now there is a load... you think it's Fort Knox bullion or something...) and that patch was right around a corner and not finished with turning.
As soon the one steer hit it it slid it sideways while the other stayed on gravel. Bent the sidewall out on the defective steer. Both were replaced as well as a check of alignment was made.Rideandrepair and truckdriver31 Thank this. -
That is what I was thinking, I just never called it a groove, and for my use actually would prefer not to have them, it seems like gravel will sometimes chunk them out, but not bad enough to have ever been a real problem.

One of the Major brands had a tire with the groove in the side, on the sidewall. Supposed to be the latest technology, I bought it !!! The 1st week, I took a chunk out of one of them. Lol . It was a good design idea, worked good against cupping. But not practical. They were discontinued,
