The 18th Amendment to the US Constitution abolished slavery.
Being forced to be on duty without pay is slavery. Being forced to be on duty driving to pick up a load without pay is slavery.
Owner Operators and company drivers are being taken advantage of big time because they allow it to happen.
House Hold Movers Guide miles needs to have ten percent attached to the miles on each run. Otherwise you end up driving one month for free every year.
I wonder if anyone really cares. We need to flood Congress with complaints against the unfairness of total Deregulation with no protection for drivers or bottom end freight rates.

You will learn to get fuel at the begining of the trip if possible, we must all assume that the time of fueling is readily available to police and DOT. If your gonna fudge, it's hard to get around that fuel time. It's really worth the time it takes to plan a trip, at least until you get used to the procedure. You can run legal. drive55cat

I never drive past my 11 hours of driving the 14 hour rule is what screws you it is a dumb rule and I wish it would die a mean painful death it serves no purpose.
I use to work in a hospital operating room I have worked 36 hours straight numerous times there was never a rule that said you have to stop working after 14 hours.Sometimes I wish there had been one since I was the only one in the room not getting paid by the case but that is a whole another story.
I always make sure my fuel times match exactly what I log and I always show 45 minutes to an hour to load and unload. All of my time is burned up by shippers and receivers but no moss grows under my butt.
Am I legal I will say on paper I am always legal and my logs are mostly current to my last duty change sometimes I do forget hey I am human
Now this is where the great lie comes in everybody knows that the system is screwed and everybody knows that you can manipulate on pen and paper that time space continuum You know it I know it the feds know it and the company's thrive on it and as long as the company's give money to the politicians then none of this will ever change and we are all pissing in the wind talking about our logs books.
Just pray to god that nothing bad happens to you when you are out of hours or your next roommate may be an angry big man and the only thing he wants to drive is you.So take care of yourself because outside of us talking about the logbooks no one else cares. You got to take care of number 1 just dont step in number 2 while you are doing it.Thats my two cents but what do I know I have only been driving for two weeks now later -
This is why trucking companies and O/O's are fighting the coming mandatory big brother black boxes that will record every move the trucks make. Because when they are implemented by the gooberment there will be no more lying on the log book to make a few extra miles.
On the other hand it will bring about some good because shippers will be forced to either load and unload in a very timely manner or pay the piper. In the long run a driver will probably be less productive because he won't be able to run 11 hrs and 15 mins to make that next truck stop. He/she will be stopping at hr 10 or 9.5 just to make sure they do not get dinged by big brother for 5 mins over log getting to a safe place to shut down that is just a wee bit farther down the road. -
Black boxes will also cause a mass exodus of driver from the industry. The companies know this, DOT & FMCSA know this. The general public, along with Pat & Crash don't really understand this.
Just think how many more trucks and drivers it will take to move the freight we have now if we all had to run legal? Where are all the trucks going to park if we all ran legal? These are just some of the problems the industry will have to over come.
It all comes down to money, running legal will cost every one money.

All those involved with in the industry understand this, it's those out side the industry that are pushing it. -
I read somewhere once that by FEDERAL law, your logs have to be accurate to within 1 hour. But the COMPANY can go above and beyond that if they so desire. -
I've ran multiple books before. Won't do it again. Its not worth it to me anymore. Now that I am on this gravy local haul, I don't run one at all.

I have always been told a bobtail can be considered a personal conveyance and subsequently show off duty on your logbook if you are going to eat or going home and the company has authorized it (provided it is within reason [this is subject to interpretation though]and you are not under dispatch). I have had this very discussion with our safety director and he and I are on the same page on this 1. I have never been found "in violation" for bobtailing to a restaraunt (while my truck was being loaded/unloaded). Nor have I been given a violation for bobtailing 30 miles to my home after I put in a 14 hour day and dropped my trailer at the company terminal.
By the way my company went through an extensive DOT audit about 2 years ago and we are now in compliance. My logs and records were 1 of many that were scrutinized and found "in compliance."
