Additives can be harmful . The purpose of a water seperator is to seperate the water from the diesel so it doesnt pass thru the fuel system causing corrosion. When you add an additive your allowing the water to pass thru the seperator therefore your bypassing the water seperator entirely . You will experience injector problems down the road. It takes time but sure to happen. Water dispersing additives do more harm than anything.

The using used motor oil pops up every so ofter, well I was involved in the 60's when the company I was working for a logging outfit on Vancouver Island bought a fancy machine to reuse the oil it had a 750D luberfiner as a primary filter, we only used the oil from the oil pan, the V12 Cummins had 4 filters and a luberfiner the V12 Detroit 2 filters and a luberfiner, the oil pan was drained and the oil siphoned into the machine, circulated threw the filter for about an hour to clean and reduce the acidity. Then fuel from the vehicle was added to the mix and the fluid was cycled threw anouther filter,750D, that ran untill the service was done about 5 hours, then it was added to the fuel tank they had about 1000 gallon tanks, to about 500.
They did this for about a month and a half, and we started losing injectors, these were old style max pressures of about 450 lbs now the injection pressures are 30,000lbs. Every injector in every truck, and machine that we did the oil reuse thing got at least one set of injectors, some got 3 we only changed the damaged ones, Some equipment sat because there were a lot of outfits that believed the sales pitch. I made a fortune changing injectors, and fuel nozzles in the 1693's
Buy clean fuel and keep it clean, I do not believe in adding any additives unless you are driving north and then an antigell. There was a fuel aditive test done google it, some additives were worse than base fuel 2% bio was the very best.
Just a thought! -
If you can find INVERTECH you will not be disappointed. I won't run anything else. adds lubricity and disperses water like no other.

I am a newb to this industry, but it seems that if we can save our trucks fuel system and get a bit more in MPG's its worth it. I hate to say it, but I am on the fence on if it works. So I am hesitant to invest.
I am looking at buying gallons or even a 5 gallon pail from here: http://dieselfuellube.com/order2.html
Do most of you guys carry gallons and guess on the amount to add or is there a better system to lugging this stuff around? Trying to get the best bang for my buck since the bucks are becoming harder to find these days. -
I can't believe we went through 11 pages and no-one even mentioned the absolute best additive on the planet. Kleen Flo 973. Blue jug. Totally awesome in every way shape and form. My equip fired up this morning in -37 without an issue and has for years because of this stuff. It also helps winter milage by around .4mpg for me in the trucks (and its hard to measure the logging equip so I can't comment on them). It helps with lubricity, idling, fuel gelling and if you have an engine that can't pass emissions throw in double the recommended amount and watch it pass with 3 snaps. I have had the same case of Diesel 911 on my shelf for quite some time because we never need it now that I run the 973. Staynadyne is a distant second.

I use methyl alcohol; cheaper than any diesel additives.

I used to use Lucas and I would see .5 mpg gain after some use but, I did notice every first application I would consistently notice the mpg drop at the first fill up then improve after that.
Surprised the Lucas fared so poorly in that test posted earlier, hell, used motor oil did better than it.
There was a test on fuel additives a few years ago on http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/forum_summary and while Bob is not a fan of Lucas at all he did say that their fuel treatment was pretty effective. On the other hand he totally exposes their oil treatment as potentially damaging product. -
Ive used lucus and Howard's but guess what now my fuel gauge sensor is having problems. This seems to be related to additives as it happens with the s10. Hey s10. Anway, I swear by additives for long life mill+ but we'll see. The stuff either gums up the guage cause it hasn't released it. Always happens just hope it doesn't go out bc I use additives! Noticiple smoother running and starting. And probably eliminates other issues I dont need. It feels like giving the casc a cheaper sip of longer life but who knows?
