Automatic transmission fluid works well too, as the guys at WyoTech told me it cleans out the injectors and keeps the tanks coated from getting alge..... never tried it tho.

Automatic transmission fluid from 30 years ago maybe. Modern ATF's have friction inhibitors. Not the kind of stuff I'd think would burn very well or cleanly. I'm ok if you dump it in your tank but its not going in mine.

thanks for all the replies. i got my fuel mileage back from maintenance after they did a download from the engine computer today. I drive a 2005 kenworth w900 with a cat 475hp ACERT engine, 3.55 rears and an 18 speed tansmission. i gross very close to 80000lb on all loads. This trip i went from winnipeg canada with a full load of pork to hidalgo texas then run empty over to galveston tx. loaded a full load of bananas in galveston then back to regina canada. ten day trip, all interstate routes and hit minimal traffic in and out of houston and dallas. Maintenance told me the ecm says 6.54mpg for the trip. its close to the figures i got on my own calculations. i work out mpg at each fuel stop then average the mpg over the entire trip. Last trip i went from winnipeg canada to san jose california, full load of pork. returned to regina canada with full load of oranges . I routed through nd, mt,id nv then over donner pass into ca. i got 6.35 mpg for that trip. i used lucas fuel additive for the last load of fuel on my run back to canada from texas. the texas run is going to get better mpg than the cali run every time because of the terrain difference. i will try the additive for a full trip if i go back to texas this coming trip and see if i can see a noticeable diffence in mpg. an increase of .1 or .2 mpg might not seem like alot but over a period of a year or more it adds up to a noticeable difference.

The guy who does my major work swears by Lucas fuel treatment in the warmer weather and Howes in the winter/cold weather. The guys who run lucas regular and have the same load week after week report .5 mpg improvement and the mechanic says it will protect them from having injector problems down the road caused by ULSD especially on the older iron. Also I should add, since so much of this stuff is pushed because guys make money selling it, he sells it as cheap as he can and still make the next order not selling it to make money but to take care of his regular customers. He says he's never had a truck gel up using the proper amount of howes in the winter time and it is the best bang for your buck. Never used lucas regular enough to give solid numbers myself but this is what I've been told. And I've never gelled up using howes. It's pretty handy that it is available everywhere you go even if you do have to pay more in the truckstop.

Hey sorry to double post here but KW9's rock I'm really interested in the way your truck runs with 3.55 rear ends I have an '05 W9 with a 550 Acert and 3.36 rear ends like everybody down here tells you you should have. Seriously thinking about regearing to 3.55's for better pulling power. What size tires do you run, what speed, how heavy, etc.? I'm running lo-pro 22.5's grossed out 80K most of the time hauling bulky loads on a flat. Thanks for any info!

I also would advise AGAINST the use of ATF. ATF is red in color, add it to your fuel & it turns your fuel red.............if you get stopped and they dip your tanks your going to have a hard time convincing them that you dumped ATF in your tanks and that your not running off road farm fuel.

I usually just buy some of the cheapest 5-30 oil I can buy and dump a little in every fill up and then dump some injector cleaner in every so many miles. just my $.02

I'm told that ATF is high detergent and for that reason I would not use it in my fuel. IMO a better choice is 2 stroke oil. A friend of mine had a S-60 that, when pulling a hill would miss on one cylinder. Figure it to be a dirty injector, put some 2 stroke in and the first hill after that, it missed a couple times then straightened right out and he never had an issue since. Another buddy that farms has an older Versatile tractor with a cummins in it and every spring, he would fire it up after sitting all winter and it would run like crap. He would put some 2 stroke oil in the fuel and it would smarten it right up. He now just treats his 1000 gallon tank with 2 stroke and it gets used in all his equipment. Something to consider is that while both motor oil and ATF will burn, they are not formulated to do so. 2 stroke oil is formulated specifically to lubricate AND to burn.

That is what they told me. Mainly for the fuel pump to keep lubed i guess, and the red dye also had me worried.

I won't be trying it anytime soon either :biggrin_25513:
