Great post GH. I work out of Albuquerque. I was OTR, but wanted to stay home and make good $$ as well. I started with a company out of Houston that would train me. Got my training and moved up to a company now that has the best pay and benefits in the state.
I will back up GH 100%. Be sure you triple check everything, what you need to load, (have a plan before you get to the rack as to what compartments you are going to put your product in), if you have to go over scales be sure that particular truck and trailer has been scaled out, have a plan of how you are going to get into the station you are going to drop at, (our drivers put a map book together, showing the station, where the drops are, how to get in to the station as safe as possible), we deliver to some stations that we have to back out into the street or even back into to unload. When you hook up your hoses make sure you are dropping unlead into the unlead tank, diesel into diesel, etc.
I don't need to go on much more, great posts on this subject. It is the best trucking job I have.
Fuel hauling info please...

After I was at my company for 3 months I dropped 3300 gallons of leaded regular into the unleaded premium tank. I had to tell the girl at the counter to not sell any premium until it was cleared by the company. And then I called the boss. Most companies would fire a driver on probation for a contaim but thet just kicked my probation out to 8 months. That was the only mix I ever had. I have never met a major oil delivery driver that did not say it was the best job he ever had. We got paid by the hour and that's the best. I don't think there's many companies left that pay by the hour but if you get on with a major it doesn't matter. What matters is the tax statement at the end of the year and how much it says you made. Right before I retired some drivers were making in $70K range with some overtime. Then you add the benefits and if you're smart you can retire and not worry about money. -
I started fuel hauling in june, and am loving it...
not complacent yet... but not paranoid either. my catch phrase is, "if ya hit the bridge at 65 it probably doesn't much matter what you're hauling"
Pretty much take my time on the corners and in traffic and pedal down the straight-aways...
Feast or famine is right on the load%, I've set as long as three hours up in clear lake iowa and almost that long at flint hills in mn. luckily I get a minimum plus comission.
and if the fuel slows way down, which it does if the prices are at peak, then I stay busy pulling a bottle of lp or doing loads of anhydrous. Anhydrous is really nasty but it pays really well also...
I've only dropped at few stations, most of my loads go to bulk plants where I pump to above ground tanks. mess of piping there... grrr... and ya just have to take your time, usually nobody around and the labeling sucks...
good pay, home every night, and weekends off, and I miss the otr gig...
lots more driving which is what I like to do. -
wat about hauling things like milk/sugar?..does the pay suck there?
