the lady at IFTA told me about people like you

you are fueling too much in the cheap states and running too much in the expensive states

you are fueling a LOT in SC and not enough in NC, because the pump price is cheaper

the only time i ever paid that much in IFTA is when i let someone else do my IFTA filing (their account) after that, i swore i would never let anyone handle filing my IFTA but me

All information so far has been very helpful, but this is the kind of break down I needed to see thanks..

what kind of software are you guys using to keep track of this. I'm pretty sure there's one on the market that will allow you to insert your fuel and miles then calculate your taxes owed..

thanks I believe I understand IFTA much better now..

    toby

i had to explain it to my wife, i did it as follows

we pay road taxes, we can pay early or we can pay later

we pay early by buying fuel that costs us more in road taxes at the pump, so in NY (just a rough example), i pay 50 cents per gallon
in SC i pay 10 cents per gallon

if i buy 100 gallons in ny, i have bought, $50 worth of road tax
if i buy 100 gallons in sc, i have bought $10 worth of road tax

if i am travelling from NY to SC and each state charges me 10cpm, i will have money left over when i get to SC
if i am travelling from SC to NY and each state charges me 10cpm, i will owe NY money by the time i get there, because i didnt buy enough road tax at the pump

so it pays to buy fuel in NY (though i never do, i prefer PA) than to buy fuel in SC (except when fuel in SC is dirt cheap (not along the 95 corridor, but the QT on 85 is great)

i never buy fuel in GA, too high a cost and too low a fuel tax

you have to buy SOME fuel in KY if you travel thru that state

    never by fuel in IN

    Tobytob Thanks this.

If you strip away the tax on Indiana fuel, it cost me about $ 3.70 a gallon. Tax per gallon is about $0.27. So I agree that its a lot to pay, I'd rather owe than overpay. I don't want to let them use my money for free.

i was told this by my accountant

if you dont pay the 22cpg at the pump, they charge you an addtl 6cpg, totaling 28cpg which is not transferred to other states, so you buy their fuel at $4gal, you dont pay the tax, you travel to other states, you get no credit, and at the end of the day, indiana hits you for 28cpg which stays in their state

i dont know how accurate that summary is, but it has worked for me

Indiana state fuel tax is as follows. At pump $0.16, off pump $0.11 (aka hidden tax) if you buy more fuel in Indiana than you burn, then you are only charged the $0.16 on fuel you bought, but didn't burn, so being that $0.11 was never charged on the over bought fuel, its not transfered.

I did, without even trying I might add, almost a perfect fuel buying deal for 2 years running, and you think I need a ifta lesson, rotflmao.

I aint the guy paying in 300 a quarter, if you really knew what youre doing you might even get a refund. I think you are buying by whats cheapest at the pump , looking at a week to week basis instead of operating looking at quarterly or yearly basis. a paycheck to paycheck type deal if ya will, to make that simpler.

So they charge you an additional 11cpg to hold on to excess IFTA? Is that the gist? And if you never buy fuel in IN you're only charged 16cpg for the fuel burned (but purchased elsewhere)?

If you burn fuel in Indiana it cost 26 cents per gal. Come on people, making it way harder than it is.

Your so vain, you probly think this song is about you.
Get a clue, I strip away the tax, then compair the prices.
Apparently you do need a lesson. Keep up if you can.
If you were to follow me around for 3 months (as if you could) you buy at you fuel stops and I buy at mine, we would both pay the exact same amount in IFTA. The only difference would be you pay at the pump, I pay most at the pump but still owe them a little and write a check. Again we would both pay the same amount. Class dismissed.
