I'm not that happy here but it's paying the bills and they let me be captain of the ship. Happy enough I'm staying at least a year or until I find something that meets my needs that'll take me.

I called, they pay1099,they have insurance but here's the kicker its only good when you're on the road and the driver pays36.00 a week.they give u a fuel card that's what they mean by fuel surcharge.lady kept dancing around my question so I think she's hiding something concerning the fuel charge.
Chewy352 Thanks this. -
Either hiding something or doesn't know and she doesn't want to come right out and say it.
Here's my WAG (Wild ### guess):
You're a 1099 contractor which means you're responsible for all your own accounting. Since you're an "independent contractor" I'm guessing that they give you the fuel card, bill the customer for the charges you incur on that particular run, then turn around and give it to you as an operating expense since you're probably going to want to claim that on your 1099.
Either way, it just sounds really fishy. especially considering the unwillingness or inability to answer some basic questions. That makes it look like you're hiding something or you're just an idiot. -
first fhing I asked was about the surcharge she ignored me and ask how did I hear about the company and other questions. after she was done I asked her again she then told me about the company
I then ask her again.she finally told me but made it hard for me to understand.she had such an accent j didn't feel like even trying to understan d -
Yeah....I'd pass that one up. Seems too shady to pursue, IMO.

I had no intentions pursuing this company sometimes I like to have fun .I'm looking strictly for local work.also I'm not an independent contractor you said in post 34.why is it companies pay by 1099?do we the drivers have to pay for an accountant?if so curious how much they charge would u think?there's a lot of shady companies on craigs list hard to believe drivers with exp falls for their scams.

It starts to get a little more complicated when you get into W2 vs. 1099. When you hire on with a company, say Swift or Werner, they are your direct employer. As such, they are responsible for your payroll which includes making sure all federal and state taxes as well as things like social security are taken out of your gross pay as required by law.
GMG Express, the company that we're talking about in this thread, use contractors instead of employees. They are basically acting as glorified freight brokers or agents and / or a leasing company and you are essentially self-employed. Since they don't employ drivers directly like Swift or Werner would, they pay you a gross sum without taking anything out of your pay. Since you are considered by the IRS to be an independent contractor, you are required to withhold your own taxes and instead of receiving a W2 from GMG like you would our other two examples, you would have to use a Form 1099. You would need to send a 1099 form to the IRS and also the state of your residence as well.
A lot of drivers that operate as contractors and use a 1099 also hire accountants since the accountant will be more versed in tax codes and how to withhold the proper amounts during the year so that you don't get a visit from the IRS a couple of years down the road when they pay you a visit for an audit.
Some of the reasons employers choose to use contractors instead of employees are that it's cheaper for them in the long run, they don't have to provide you with the same benefits that they would if you were an employee (like insurance benefits), and it absolves them of a lot of legal hassles in regards to recordkeeping and payroll.pattyj Thanks this. -
