Not sure on how to start my reply, first as i stated in my original post is both methods are equal not that one is better than another, the whole issue going down a major downgrade or any downgrade is your speed not the braking method, if you are going to fast, no matter how you brake you are going to smoke your brakes, get brake fade and could end up in serious trouble. If a driver gets a wheel fire going by going down to fast and burning up his brakes that driver would be in a world of hurt before the wheel fire. If you decend down a grade at the proper speed there will be no concern about cooling your brakes as they will not be hot enough. If you are smoking your brakes going down, you pull over right away set your brakes and you sit there until they stop smoking, then proceed at a slower speed, no harm, no foul, lesson learned. There is really no set distance that you ride or use your brakes, you use them until you safely made it to the bottom or close to the bottom. my .02 cents

Yesterday, I took the 10 question air brake test on this website & took it 4 times. Also took it 2 times today. The question : "When going down a long steep hill you should?"

There are 2 answers on here:

Every other time I took the test the correct answer is "Release the brake when you are 5 mph below your safe speed."

Every other time I took the test the correct answer is "Use a low gear and apply light pressure on the brakes."

This is from this TTR wesite. I recommend everyone, experienced or inexperienced take the 10 question air brake test several times.

This is where you show your immaturity fellow, I never said that I knew everything about driving, not 1 single solitary time. I even said that on my last scheduled trip I was still learning. And yes it does mean squat....at least I'm not too ashamed to put out the facts about myself...that goes a long way in a conversation , but I''ll stand my 33 years of accident free driving up against anyone, I'm proud of that accomplishment. It took alot of effort and paying attention plus listening to guys with much more experience than I to be able to do it. If you want proof of my driving record, I can document it with my DMV report and awards that I won from Golden State Foods where I worked for 30 years. I'll be in Greenville NC on Thursday May 9th, because my oldest son will be graduating from Brody school of Medicine on Friday the 10th...I'll be happy to meet you at the place of your choice, buy you a cup , and show you that I'm telling you the truth, and that I'm not just an internet cowboy. We can disagree on braking all day...makes no difference to me at all, I don't have to worry about it anymore. But , I'll never call anyone ignorant or a liar anywhere on a computer or to his face.....Now if you want the facts, meet me or not I'm waiting for your reply..........

Wow!! That post wasnt directed at you personally!! Must be true as it sure bothered you!!

I always change that number; check my history of posts and you will see that.

When you get to Greenville PM me!! As a fellow ECU Alum I'd be estatic to have a sit down with you. As far as "proving" your driving history; no need as this debate is going around in circles.

As far as calling you ignorant or a liar; never said that!! Never directed ANY post towards you until YOU felt the need to try and use your "superiority" with your years of experience over mine:
Thats exactly the point I was making!! The only thing that matters is the info posted!! In case you missed it, here it is again: "Lets look at it this way; this is a question in the NEW drivers forum!! What if theyre studying for their test or out on a road test and apply THE OLD method and fail!!" This technique is what they are teaching now!!

In almost every single post you make you ramble about how much experience you have and your awards and blah blah blah.............

Gotta get the boat ready; gonna be a great day fishing!!! I aint waiting for your reply!!

One truism in life is that most people feels as if they are normal. As such an honest person will generally believe others are honest until proven different, on the other hand a dishonest person will feel most others are also dishonest.

If your immediate assumption is that others stats listed are BS, I would have to suspect you fall into the later group. Personally I have no reason to doubt someone who says he has 33 years of driving experience. He assumed others were also telling the truth when he used their stats. That indicates an honest person, he accepted their stated stats as real.

I'm not the one going off on a rant.....like I said I'll prove my record...prove yours sir...don't just rant about how you don't care what I did in the old days...you sure get defensive in a hurry when someone lays facts in your lap. The way I was taught to come down a mountain WORKED..it STILL DOES...now if technology has improved that is great, makes it safer for all involved...but don't be so quick to discount someone just because they take a different view. I don't think I know it all never said so.....

There the story gets real interesthing.:biggrin_25526:
Not stab braking but snub braking.

What i do with tankers,if they slush a lot,is to be in a lower gear.
Lets say you take a grade in a flatbed in 7° gear..............with a tanker i would be in 6° or 5° gear.
So you use hardly any brake.
You need that extra margin with a tanker in case off emergency.
