Thread hi-jack. Your driving off road ,the truck HAS a jake and your loaded. So you have to come down this 25% grade. What do you do?

    25%?

stop. You aren't going to make it. you cross over the drop and you'll hang up your landing gear. Not to mention, your 5th wheel doesn't have that much travel in it to flex.

    1. Stop truck set parking brake.
    2. Call for helicopter to lower my rig down.

I'm going to correct my previous answer, as it is Snub braking I was thinking of, not Stab. Anyhow brake to slow 5mph from max safe speed.

Most off road trailers do not have landing gears and the ones that do(Floats)are folded back. The Dozer hand trims the crest off so you can drop off to the main grade. Logging,Pipelines and Oil Patches/Drill Rigs have these kinds of driving conditions.

it sounds to me like you are actually in too low of a gear, and trying to snub brake.....in a lower gear, your rpms will climb quicker. While I would agree snub braking is the better way to go, if you are in too low of a gear, you will find yourself hitting the brakes more often to keep from over-revving the engine, which will bleed air pressure, causing loss of brakes. my suggestion is this....pick a higher gear, maybe instead of second, try third or fourth. use the snub braking idea. If you do it correctly, it should take 5 seconds to slow down from your safe speed, and you will be able to descend hills all day long. And while I normally disagree with losttrucker, he is very right on this...

I also stand corrrected: It is Snub Braking to slow 5mph from max safe speed.

Stevens trucks all have jakes... Drivers are taught to descend mountains with and with out the jake... never know when it may fail.
