If you have time keep your eyes and mind open. Often you will find something in an area to interest you. My wife and I have rented wave-runners in Buloxi, MS. Gone to the Alamo and did the River Walk. We enjoyed the beaches in Jacksonville, FL. I know in VT there are places near to truck parking you can rent snowmobiles. We really enjoyed our time in Jackson, WY too. Flip through a phone book, or cruise the internet for nearby fun spots and enjoy!

I always have fun on the road. Just drink hot coffee and listen to country music with my earbuds. I love being on the road with other truck drivers. Or also talking on my CB radio with my fellow friends. Sorry, I know this is a 5 year old forum I just answer.

Still a really good thread. I know some drivers who only get out of their trucks to eat and crap. They always seem miserable. Ive been using uber a lot to get around big cities. Sometimes I will just go walking.

Completely different back in the day. When I was leased to CF in the 70',80's,we were usually laid over once a month or so at one of our company offices, which were usually in a big truck stop. Remember,no cell phones, computers, internet, etc. Way more laid back, not the dog eat dog era now. Board dispatch, when it's your turn,it's your turn.
For example,we had a good agent and office,at the old Cordelia truckstop in Fairfield California, great truckstop, long gone. One of the drivers had bought an old car for all of us to use,it was parked at the truck stop, ours to use,if you broke it,you fixed it,simple.Agent paid the insurance,in case we got in trouble. If we were laid over on the weekends,we would pile in the car,go to San Francisco, visit Fishermans Wharf, ride a cable car, dinner, etc. Some weekends we would go wine tasting at all the different wineries in the area, some weekends we'd go to the drag races at Sonama racetrack, which was right down the street. I remember prowling thru old car junkyards in the area, going to local fish camps. Even pursued more creative things, like watching Jello wrestling in Napa.
And always a cookout in the back row of the truckstop somewhere,we all carried a small hibachi in the tarp box.
Getting out of the truck on the weekends, the comradery, friends, fun we had back in the old days, great memories I wouldn't sell for a million bucks, after 45 years behind the wheel. Doubt if there's much of this anymore.

We have time alright. Here and and there and everywhere.

My form of fun in the day started with the old Photon which went BK in 89' essentially red team green team wearing radio gear and a RFID weapon inside a arena. Best team wins. That evolved into other more advanced laser gaming.

Frederick had a Laser Storm for a while anyway near the truckstop, no problem raising a few games on time off. I fought two Maryland State Troopers in there once. It came out to a draw, they were using teamwork that I found very difficult so mobility and attacking whichever was in the back first then picking off the front. I was pretty good by then, but those two. Whew they were fast (I guess they had to be...) scored out a draw.

I aint doing that again that's for sure =)

Mall of America was a favorite. They had like 40 acres of dirt gravel in the north side parking for semis. Park it and you need a day to find the right door to get back to it. 5 levels too if I remember right. However it did have the flaw that in deep snow winter situations the roof was flawed, if the exchangers got buried they had to close that food court.

I imagine things maybe changed a little bit there.

Out west a little bit of horse trailing. Never mind the idea that all of them are nose to tail up a few miles and back waiting for the barn to go eat what's cooking when they get there. There was another near Harpers Ferry above the river that were a little bit more free but you had to be sure to get your rides in when they are rested in the morning. They are after all mountain horses and get tired. You really cannot get a big truck in there.

Sometimes I'll park it at Owings mills and subway downtown into Baltimore for the day at the harbor. If Im lucky I'll rent either a power boat or sail depending on wind. (Really small craft something like less than 20 foot, nothing too difficult unless tide is coming in with rollers)

However bowling was my big thing. You could always grab a whole corner in the back with a semi, take the bag and shoes and throw ten pin. Don't ask me why I would wanna toss a 14 pounder three games worth when I just got done throwing 48000 pounds of canned soda or something. It literally erases the mind and whatever the problems in it. Along with the french fries and burger junk food. Im currently redrilling a ball and getting it down to 11 light because I have had some degenerative medical changes and am reluctant to continue wish me luck. (If someone says break a leg I'll chase you lol.)

Yeah it blows my mind when I see half of the guys in the truck stop sitting in the drivers seat...staring out the windshield for their break. I already spend enough time there, so I'm always looking for an escape on the road. Its necessary to keep the sanity.

My wife and I do a reset every week running team...we used to uber a lot, and now we look for an enterprise nearby, as they pick you up and a daily rental is often the same price as uber round trip.

Used to haul heavy equipment in and out of the ConExpo show in Vegas years ago. Lots of time to kill. Rented an old classic 4 speed Corvette for a couple of days, drove all around Southern Nevada, top down, had a blast. Was just really a commercial tourist all the years I drove, always taking time to smell the roses, and still made a good living.
