So I’ll be graduating next month and I’ve been doing some pre-applications. It seems like anytime I find a company, I find out they are extremely shady, don’t pay their workers, etc. I’m just trying to find a company to start with and gain experience but not be taken advantage of. For context, I’m from southern Louisiana. If anyone has any advice on what to do, it’d be highly appreciated!

Trucking is shady. Can't really avoid it if you're in the industry. As long as you stay W2 you can rely on your state labor board to get you owed wages if need be.
As a new driver, you're not going to make much money OTR because all the carriers willing to take you on are paying through the nose for insurance to cover you unless they're self insured.
You are a very high risk employee that's going to have accidents. Any company that hires you is going to take advantage of you by default. No way to avoid it unless you get a local job that pays hourly.
Good thing is you have this forum to read and learn vicariously from other's unfortunate experiences. You also have this site to ask for help and advice when you can.
Just pick a carrier that comes to your school and has the trailer type you're looking to learn with a preference as close to home as possible.nextgentrucker and GoneButNotForgotten Thank this. -

The best money right now in this economy is refrigerated & flatbed.
If you don't want that you'll have to go with dry van.
Schneider might hire you for tankers, but put the dry van fleet at the bottom of your list. -

Southern Louisiana?
Why don't you just say, "the Gulf Coast"?
A zip code would work much better....
