Most those you mentioned self insure up to a certain point, with major insurance premiums costing a lot less than first dollar coverage a O/O would have to have.

Ok you want to get your own truck and log while still in the service. Here's a suggestion. go talk to the guys you see driving these trucks and find out if they are company drivers or O/O leasde to the mill or the logging company if there are company drivers go talk to the logging company and see if he will let you work around the yard or something driveing shutel or what ever and work up to geting into one of his truck to gain the needed experiance to run one of your own. Or if they are O/O find out where they get there insurance and go talk to them you may be surprized if they are not leaving the state and runn local you may be able to afford the insurance for a newcomer especialy if you have had training in the service that will dconvert to civivlian type classes like the driver training courses and the safty classes and all that may help you out some. You have the other problem thought you said you had like 3 years left thats a llot of chance for deployment to the big sand box over here and it doesn't look like we wil be leaving here any time soon.

Thanks for all the info. I am going to talk to some of the log haulers and pick their brains.

There are many companies that will insure new ventures at a premium of course. Im working on get my o/o set up after 2 yrs of driving for my father but he never had me on his insurance policy since his policy has a no driver exclusion clause. So I had to get a new venture insurance and it comes to about 10k per yr. But it might be more or exclude the type of cargo that you want to haul. In my area there are tons of steel haulers (something I would never want to do) and my insurance agent told me to never haul that as it would cause the insurance companies to cancel the policy. Good luck with your plans
