It is Not a matter of IF you can work or not, it's a little more involved than that.

I deal with this stuff alot, and it is a pain in the butt.

If you are getting it, and deserve it, good for you !!!!!!

WOW! Interesting thread and interesting points of view expressed here. Almost all of which have a lot of merit, no matter which side of the argument you are on.

I do believe the OP has to right to collect disability, only because the government changed the rules on him.

Without throwing stones at anyone here, I'll say this. I am fat. I also have both bone and nerve problems that I have had to live with for many years. I retired from my last job because of the bone problem.

But there is work I CAN do, so I never tried to collect disability. I have both my law enforcement pension, and social security. While it isn't much, it is enough to get by, if we are careful. Should there become a time when it is not, then I will go back to work.

Anyway, as to the fat situation. I have been fat in various degrees ALL of my life. Yep, I've done it to myself, and I know how to correct it. I just haven't found the will power to take the necessary steps in the past several years.

A lot of folks look at fat people with complete disgust and loathing. OK, whatever floats your boat is fine by me. But you need to look pretty hard at yourself, because there is always SOMETHING you have done or are doing, (or are going to do,) that will make somebody else "look down" on you.

It's just a fact of life, because nobody is perfect.

    Here's the way i feel.
The man did the job for 35 years and now because some skinny person wearing a suit and tie sitting in a plush corner office in a white ivory tower that can't tell the difference between a fifth wheel or a steering wheel, suddenly decides that he cant do the job anymore???

SCREW THAT and pay the man his disability!

It would b a completely different story if the man never worked day in his life and was asking for a handout.

Of course he paid into it. What maybe $50.00 per week Max? Or $2600 per year?

So over 35 years he paid $91,000 max. (I doubt that much) So at $1600 per month he gets everything back in 4.7 years. Likely sooner.

Then is he forced to go off disability?

    No.

Where does the money come from then?

The same place it came from for Cash for Clunkers and the bailouts and the
research on Global Warming etc. It's hardly a drop in the bucket at all compared to the money our govt wastes each and every single day when you do the math.

So now let me ask you a question. If you live to be 100 years old and started drawing SS when you were 65, did you not get back more than they calculated you would? Of course! That's why SS is going broke. I'd like for them to just end SS and give those that paid in their money back in one lump sum. We know that will never happen though.

well lets hope you or someone in your family close to you never needs it but you or they may and i have no problem with big rigger collecting after 35 years on the job. it's called disability insurance . no 1 individual pays in the full amount they get in return.

how much do you pay in car insurance ? lets say $1000. a year and you have a $30,000 car and it gets totaled in your first year you will get the book value in return ...who pays that? other insurance company customers ! works the same way

what i do have a problem with is immigrants legal or not come into the system paying nothing or very little and getting full benefits of housing, food stamps ,education ,etc on the americans workers backs .

the system was originally designed for the benefit of american's, not illegals that have put the most burden on it. but they have to do much less to receive the benefits than a person that lives here all their life and payed into the system.

it is temporary ! untill he reaches 62 the retirement age then he will get his regular social security as will you !!!

good for you big rigger !!!!!!

I hope that niether I nor, my family ever NEEDS it either. I'm not necessarily disputing the validity of disability for someone who needs it.

I'll say it again - self-inflicted conditions shouldn't qualify. I'm sorry that the OP spent too many years over eating but, that is something that he could have prevented. Why should the system bear the burden for a personal choice?

Take that same car to a scrap yard and have it crushed (personal choice) and try to file an insurance claim. Insurance is generally used to protect the insured in the event of an "accident". Deliberate behavior is not accidental.

We agree.... and, I think the majority of Americans also feel the same way.

Yeah and, the system really wasn't designed to be a lifestyle choice either.

If your full retirement age is older than 65 (that is, you were born after 1937), you still will be able to take your benefits at age 62, but the reduction in your benefit amount will be greater than it is for people retiring now.

Here's how it works if your full retirement age is 67.
    • If you start your retirement benefits at age 62, your monthly benefit amount is reduced by about 30 percent. The reduction for starting benefits at age
      • 63 is about 25 percent;
      • 64 is about 20 percent;
      • 65 is about 13.3 percent; and
      • 66 is about 6.7 percent.

i've never read a thread where i've agreed with blackw900 on just about everything. getting disability just because you're a lard ### makes me shake my head. yeah, there are some medical instances where weight gain is unavoidable, but i find most people using the thyroid excuse just to cover the fact they're lazy.
