If I'm trying to hear a stock 29 or any radio from far away, then by all means, squelch off and RF gain wide open. But most of the time I get annoyed at perpetual static. Or worse, static that intermittently passes the squelch.

How do you set your radio? I've heard some leave squelch off and turn RF gain down just until it's silent. I used to leave RF gain all the way up and then bring on squelch for silence. Lately, I lower RF gain to get background noise near S1 on the meter, and then silence that with squelch. Are certain combinations better than others? Again, I'm not always looking for max receive unless I'm maintang contact with another operator.
EDIT: I want max practical receive range without static interjections or useless distant chatter. However, I don't want to block others who I can reach. -
in my world there's no such thing as useless distant chatter. I leave the squelch all the way open and I turn the RF gain down to the threshold of noise sometimes I leave the RF gain slightly above the threshold of noise just to make sure I'm not losing anything

Remember that rabbi is trying for the distance record in rf.
By the way rabbi it mutes the audio, nothing else.wolverine11 Thanks this. -
I suppose that muting the audio of someone that is trying to tell me something would probably prevent me from hearing that person.
at least it sounds logical to me anyway -
For the last 20 miles me and a couple operators have been checking in to see how far we can reach. During this time, I left my radio wide-open to hear everything. Most of the time, drivers have their radios set so they can hear no more than a mile away on purpose. Why would I want to hear all of their nonsense if I have no chance of talking to them?

I crank the Squelch up so as I don't have to listen to more useless garbage of an idiot "lacking the Pantys"
BTShepp Thanks this. -
On my way back from Nashville to Chicago, I kept the squelch all the way counterclockwise, but turned the RF gain down so that I couldn't hear any noise in the background. It works really well. Intelligible signals come through clearly, and weak signals are either lost or very quiet. I get annoyed at the squelch when it cuts off the middle of transmissions. Using the RF gain keeps everything very smooth as to not offend my ears.

Does anyone know why on my Galaxy 949 that the meter is reading to receiving jumping back and fourth but he makes no noise for the speaker I can't get it scratched to work or whatever happened I don't know please help
-
If the ground wire in the microphone is broken, you won't get any sound from the speaker. A dirty CB/PA switch can cause this symptom also, or the internal speaker is bad for whatever reason.
