    I'm strongly considering buying a Galaxy Dx 949 Cb Radio
    to replace my 17 year old Cobra 29LTD. Is that a high quality radio
    or is the Cobra 148GTL a better radio???

    Larger footprint for either of them than what you have now. 979 or Uniden 980(both SSB) are about the same size with front microphone plug, so it will fit in places the larger radios won't.

    Depends on which 148 GTL you're referring to.

    If you get the Taiwan or Phillipines versions, yes.

    The Chinese versions....no.

    The Galaxy is ok but they're notorious for cold solder joints that can be hard to trace down. Last thing you want is a colder solder joint radio suffering in a mobile semi.

    Here's the BIG question.....do you need single side band? Are you going to use single side band?

    Because while it's a more efficient mode, most truckers (as I have found) do not know what single side band is, do not care, and prefer to stay on AM only, which is what your Cobra 29 does...

    So, unless you intend to use SSB, and know of someone else who does, then you are wiser to stick with the AM only radios, such as the Cobra 29, 25, Uniden PC 68 or 78.

    Thanks for the information. I'm not a Semi driver but when I travel, I enjoy listing to the conversation along with getting Reports on Traffic (Construction, delays, etc.) and weather ahead of me. Guess I'll go ahead and buy my original first choice which is a Cobra 29 WXNWST. No need to waste money on an SSB radio if very few Drivers use it.

    Now if you go get your general class ham license, sideband is the primary mode for the long distance stuff. The equipment for that is much better too...
