Well, I finally did my first cb radio alignment at home. I scored a Kenwood SM-220 scope on Fleabay and it works great for this too. I downloaded the service manual for the radio and did a "by the numbers" alignment on the transmit section. This radio had been "peaked n tuned" by someone that is supposed to be good. First step in the manual was to check the bias current settings. The book specs were 50ma, and 100ma. These were set way too low. Sideband APC was 12.8v. I peaked the sideband power using the 1000 hz tone that my scope provides (nice feature!) and set them correctly. Then I set sideband ALC for about 12-13 watts. I set the am carrier power for about 5 watts dead key, (it was set at 8 ) and then I modulated the radio with that 1000hz tone and set the modulation pot to 100% on the scope. I flat-topped the sine-wave and then backed off the modulation until the sine wave was not distorted looking and perfect. Now when I transmit the modulation % meter goes to 100% and pulls back to about 90% right way so I know the limiter is working properly. Now this radio sounds great and I get compliments on the audio quality. Its loud and very crystal clear. The radio's lights don't go dim on transmit either now LOL.
