I think I'm going to get a spiral bound MCRA. I'm going to use my Garmin Street Pilot c330 to tell me how to go, and then use the MCRA to check it.

It'll take longer but I see no way to put complete trust in ANY GPS at this juncture.

Can't EVEN afford a TND which is probably the best one out there just now.

It MUST be said however that my Garmin 330 is VERY good at giving ETA.

Microsoft Streets and Trips uses Navtech maps just like Garmin does. For all useful purposes there really are only two map makers for GPS systems. NavTech and TeleAtlas. Tiger is big too, but its more of an odd ball govt kinda deal.

Are you saying that Garmin is using ALK map data instead of Navteq maps on the trucker version? Or, just the algorithm software? To my knowledge they only use NavTech and Tiger. ALK uses a company called Zenrin for their trucking software.

Time is the problem. It took 10-12 years to get the first "truck" friendly GPS out, and its probably only been 2 years since the first version was released. Its going to take a few more years before they get any where near idiot proofing these things. Anybody that purchased a GPS 5 or 6 years ago knows they have improved immensely over the years. Just like our desktop and laptop computers. They grow in leaps and bounds constantly.

Only a fool trusts in a GPS 100%, it is a very useful tool, but its one of several that have to be used. Our eyes are #1. Followed closely by a truckers atlas, and finally a pre trip plan still needs to be laid out.

Here is something kinda fun to play with, but be warned its got the US govt's fingerprints all over it. Not as good as it could be...
