The 780 uses Bluetooth between the phone and GPS.
I was 770 user. The 780 still has the same traffic updates that the 770 does. The 780 display is a little bit better. I like using the Garmin app on my phone to overlay weather radar and weather updates per the route you are running on. The wifi updating works very well for keeping it updated as well.

Would be curious to reset the data usage counter on the phone and see what the Garmin requests in a typical day (traffic only)
-
The traffic data does not come from the phone for the most part. As far as I know of it comes from satellite feed as the 770 did.
-
Traffic can only come from internet connection or via parallel broadcast from FM stations found in larger markets. If internet than it will leverage the Google/INRIX traffic network which pretty much covers all roads pinging cellular users speed, location, and heading then compiling the data.
If over FM traffic decoder, the traffic data will be far more constrained and localized using city and state monitoring tools.HD_Renegade Thanks this. -
Sorry to report this but Garmin has a problem with the new map update. It's been pulled from the market. They have some real routing issues. They are working in it. Their maps come from a 3rd party. I found this out yesterday and it was confirmed today. The tech at Garmin told me to let everyone know.

Biggest problem I have seen is mile markers disappearing.
-
They need to get their head out of their butt and get this crap fixed.
-
What’s broke on the garmin or is it just affecting the 78x series? My 770 works fine except bogs down as you start zooming out to scroll.

I have been routed wrong 5 times in the last month. It will happen. Here's the strange part. It does it going but coming back it was OK. Put me off onto a narrow two lane for 5 miles winding through country roads then came right back out on the original road I was on, which is straight as an arrow. Going back it was fine. Just be careful. It will route you wrong.
