thanks for the heads up, that's crappy to hear the trainers may be like that. after all the research i have done, i am thinking i'd really like to have a quality, competent trainer that is going to be willing to help me, give me advice etc. without being a prick about it. i will def look into gypsum, they aren't much farther away from me as Garner is either. and all the additional pay you get for non driving stuff. which many companies don't seem to offer as much of that. i am not sure Trainco is technically 'accredited' or not. and on their site it says for recent graduates need to have gone to an accredited school. guess ill shoot them a phone call tomorrow and see what they say. id REALLY like to find a good first place and not have to worry about jumping around in my first year. heck, if my first place could be the place im at for years, that'd be even better!

Krazy K, I hope you did not sit on that load. Anytime you are not getting enough miles, you should call and see if it can be relayed in the yard. Nobody makes money if you are running like that. Most likely they would have you drop it and put you on something else. I see you just joined TR, but how long have you been with Garner? Would you want some help with time management? I am offering, not trying to criticize. I don't want you to take this wrong. No matter who you drive for, you will need to be able to push your way to the best runs and miles. Let me know...

dbo, Be cautious on who you trust for what you read on any forum. Does it sound logical or sound like someone with an axe to grind? I am a trainer here at Garner and I can tell you that IF racial comments were stated like that, they would be addressed immediately! No company would or should allow a trainer to put them at risk for such stupidity! Trainees are always allowed to talk, that idea is laughable! How else would we be able to help a trainee unless we listen as well as teach? I am not saying that Garner is the right choice for you, only you can decide that. However, I will not allow someone to talk about what I do with such incredulous stories! I am not the trainer he is speaking about, I only train the women, but I know these men and while no one is perfect... these are good men! They want to help create only the best drivers and deserve the truth and some basic respect!
Best of luck to you in your future and I hope you love trucking as much as I have for the last 20 years!Tennesseahawk, Lonesome and dbo Thank this. -
oh im not taking what was said as gospel. and from the research ive done, it seems to be a very common practice for bad sheep or pissed off former employees to bad mouth former employers. And that's not to say that, because attempting to trainer proper competent drivers being the good idea, is always what is followed out there with company trainers. i am sure many of the employer and even trainer horror stories that exist out there often times have some basis in fact. it's not going to be a pissy former employee just making stuff up 100% of the time.
at this point though, even after talking to the gypsum recruiter etc, im probably still leaning towards garner, even if the trainers aren't perfect. gypsum is primarily flatbed and that's not something i am overly eager to get into. climbing around trailers in the heat and cold lugging around 100-150lb tarps doesn't excite me.Lonesome and girlsdrivetoo Thank this. -
I would say follow you're gut, I wouldn't be running to do flatbed either I'm with you on that.

dbo, Glad to hear that you know to take everything with a grain of salt. With that said, be sure to ask trainco if they are finding it harder to place their students since they started charging the companies that take them. I just wonder how that is working out? I know some of the companies quit taking students to train because they already invest thousands to train them after they leave school, so they refuse to pay trainco another thousand or so just to place them. I think you have better luck with the few carriers that are willing to pay what trainco wants them to pay. It seems unfair to limit your choices, but I guess the school wants more money in their pockets... They just recently started charging this and I wonder how it affecting the students?

lol yeah, Scott specifically said to me when i talked to him 'we choose not to participate in that program' i was fortunate enough that one of the 5 original applications trainco had me fill out, Garner was one of them. so that allowed garner to contact me directly. for anyone who comes to trainco and recruits & then hires a student, there is that $1,000 fee they charge them. i don't think any company is obligated to pay trainco unless they come to the facility to recruit directly from the student pool. if people, like myself, apply on our own etc. and negotiate getting hired ourselves or whatever, then there is no issue.
At one point when i stopped into trainco for some paperwork and mentioned two others out of the 5 applications that was originally sent on my behalf had contacted me, they said they was only aware of Werner and to tell the other two to contact Trainco to let them know as well. After speaking to Scott later, i found out why that was. because they want to be able to charge that fee. i think it's a pretty silly policy. the only service they 'provide' for job placement is allowing recruiters to come in and talk to students. and with the constant high demand of professional truck drivers as it is, getting a job in the industry doesn't seem to take a special "career day" from the school. Or any help from them whatsoever. i am easily able to fill out my own applications. though, new students/drivers biggest weakest would be not knowing all the companies to try and apply to. -
Thanks dbo! That is great advice for future students! You should start a thread on that!

Wow a school that charges trucking companies a fee to place students there sounds like a POS school. What's the price of this Trainco school? Makes me glad I'm looking at the tech schools here in WI instead.
GDT you still getting to WI? -
Trainco only last year i believe started this policy. i guess it's not unique, as ive heard of other places that do it too. though it does come across as a bit of a money grab to me because they know how desperate many trucking companies are for drivers. the cost of the schooling is a fair price though and from what i hear, the training itself is fine. usually 5 students and 2 instructors per class.
