That is absolutely true. But to pretend like there's a 20% horsepower loss because you're in a 20% Overdrive, merely shows that one doesn't understand the difference between horsepower and torque. Bruce is dangerous because he knows just enough to make it sound like he knows what he's talking about, kind of sort of like the best lies have a little bit of Truth.

The loss of horsepower from running in OD can be made up if you run Max Mileage Catalyst in your tanks.

Well another thing to point out is all the newer downsped trucks with AMTs are actually overdrive transmissions running sub-2.64 rears. Back in the 90s, running a direct drive transmission with 2.64 gears was a great setup for fuel economy. Bruce fails to recognize that technology has come a long way since then because he has a business to run and an ax to grind.

So what's an ideal gear ratio for a 13spd running van and reefer if you're usually running 70-80K ? Prob a question with a thousand answers but the oldheads know what works for them .

Back in the day (higher cruise rpm & 24.5's) 3.55 & 3.70 were the most common, with the fast guys running 3.36.

I've been hauling cars with little bitty donut tires for so long I don't know what everyone dragging a box is running nowadays, but I'm sure it's taller than that with the lower cruise rpm and lp 22.5's the most common tire.

    What kind of engine?

If you have an X-15 I’d say go with whatever has you taching around 1300 at 65-70 mph. That way you won’t have to downshift at the very sight of the slightest incline.

    Just my .02
