Identical spec trucks....
Shorter (bigger number) gears get you to the top of the hill faster
taller (lower number) get you there first on flat ground
Add in any heavy hauling, off roaring, and tall rubber and shorter gears are useful for picking up the difference as well
My 3.55 11r22.5 rtlo 18 in 8 direct runs about 1550 at 60 mph, my uncles spare tractor has 11r25.5 and 3.70 rears with only an rto 13 speed, in 13, it also runs about 1550 at 60, basically they use different methods to get to the same place
Gear Ratios: Misinformation at its worst.

Of course, trying to get the double over crowd to understand that, is definitely tilting at windmills.Dale thompson, Accidental Trucker, jason6541 and 2 others Thank this. -

“Had that old peterbuilt back in the day with a big cam Cummings and a 15 double over with 411s and that some ##### would run 120 mph”

I've always been a fan of 3:55s or 3:70s with an 18 speed and tall rubber myself. Plenty of grunt for getting off in the weeds or pulling long, steep grades... But can still get out and run.

I have never seen a 15 with .73....they are .79 and 1.1. Chaps my ### to hear someone say 15 double over.
I have heard of guys flipping gears around to get like a .62 or so high gear in a 15. Imagine going from 1.1 in 9th to .62 in one shift pulling a cow bus at 88k in a Kansas cross windlester, Tug Toy, Dale thompson and 8 others Thank this. -
Selling mid information and snake oil. Seems funny I don’t buy any snake oil or mystery fluids or filters. I take care of my truck and it gets regular proactive maintenance and I run my trucks to a million then sell them. Very rarely down for unscheduled maintenance and only 1 time in last 30 years has one of my trucks been on a hook for mechanical failure.
I use common sense and good maintenance. Don’t contribute to either one of snake oil salesmen retirementJames j, Hammer166, Bean Jr. and 1 other person Thank this. -
