I’ll stand by my compromise gearing.....

    600 Cat / 18speed / 3.70 / 11R24.5 tall ......

won’t get 8 mpg but does a great job up to 114k the most I’ve scaled on it....

I wouldn't want much taller than that if it ever sees soft ground. One could go a step or two higher on a strictly highway truck that never leaves hard ground, but you know that.

I think the 15 double over deal came from the days of the 5x3. There was a combo where the mains 4th was direct and 5th was od. The 3 speed aux had 1st=under, 2nd= direct, 3rd= od. So technology a double over. I’m not sure of the actual od ratio but I have this combo in my great grandfathers Diamond T and they always referred to it as a double over.

To go into od in the main you have to cross back over from down right to upper left were reverse is in a normal 13,15,and18.

The term double over does indeed come from the days of two sticks. Like in your example, both boxes were were OD.

But that term with the 15 came from another direction. I don't remember exact details, can't even remember who shared them, maybe @AModelCat? But the gist was that at some point the 15 got a taller OD than the earlier models, and that one was referred to as the "double over 15" to differentiate it from shorter OD. Maybe someone else has time to dig up the old gear charts, but I gotta run.

Not too sure. My RTO-15615 is just a single overdrive of 0.78. Auxillary section consists of deep reduction, low and direct. Only overdrive is against the dash with the main box.

Spec a truck to run 1150 then ##### why it won't last a million. Because being just above idle all the time is a swell ideao_O

Just depends on what you’re running. I try and keep mine between 1100 and 1400. Right now with an 18 and 3.36 I’m about 1350 at 65. My new truck will have a 12 speed auto and 2.79 rears and I’ll be at 1325 at 70mph. I know guys in the 9’s that have gone with lower h.p. engines because as long as you stay in the torque they’re getting by with less h.p. but I’m not brave enough to try that. So I’m sticking with 510/1850.
