Oops, you're right. I've gotten so used to people getting upgraded on the spot, like I did for Advanced & Extra, that I forgot that one has to get an original call sign issued by the FCC.

My bad. I haven't been involved in any VE sessions except as a consumer, and it's been years since I've heard of anyone bothering with getting the Novice.

    Thanks for setting me straight.

New to the forums - just signed up, so if I screw up, please bear with me..

I'm a trucker - been at it almost 32 years. I like a radio that, paired with the best mobile antenna I can get, can talk a great distance (more than across the median) and have it sound good. I like just enough echo and reverb to be barely noticeable - I've been told that it sounds "cleaner". Being able to talk for dozens of miles to other drivers is great, especially when you're trying to talk to a friend or get help.

I've found the General Lee is one of the most powerful "barefoot" (no linear amplifier) and best-sounding radio on the market. I personally HATE the roger beep.. Without the ham license, I can see no reason to go off "D" setting on the radio - although at some point, I plan on flipping channels and listen to see if others are talking (could be handy in an emergency to talk to some of y'all to get help to a devastated area). Note I said "LISTEN" - I have NO intentions of SAYING anything!!

I well understand you hams hating interlopers - we get these big base stations that broadcast with hundreds of watts, and try to talk cross-country on channel 19 - and walking all over those of us trying to get local information. And all they do is sound like those old Verizon ads - "can you hear me now?"..

    Y'all take care!

Properly tuned this is what they are supposed to sound like and this is what my radios sound like.

Unfortunately I only know one guy that is capable of making them sound like this

913 in Florida made the video and it's difficult to hear his audio but you can hear 163 in Las Cruces New Mexico and you can hear String Bean 379 in San Diego California.
String bean is one of 163's customers which is why his radio sounds just as crystal clear and loud as 163's

There have been times when conditions have been just right, and I've skipped from Stockton, CA, to Tulsa, OK - barefoot! (But I couldn't talk across the median strip, because of the noise! Go figure...)

Those are nice-sounding radios.. And STRONG - I saw the signal strength on the meter!

If it's not the talkback, it might be a ground issue if it happens only when the engine is off.

The General Lee barely gets into the voice portion of 10 meters. While the legal limits of 10 meters are wider the band plan designed for courteous operation designates 28.300 as the start of voice. The band plan is not law just designed so different modes are not on top of on another like the skip talkers /contesters on channel 19 drowning out those looking for local information. If you wish to get licensed and use 10 meters to its best advantage a multiband HF radio would be a better choice long term. Sunspot cycle is set to peak in 2025 so 10 meters ought to be interesting.
